Is the Television Set Destined to Become a Tear of the Times?
With the rapid development of the information age, the television set, once the center of family entertainment, is facing unprecedented challenges. Mobile phones, tablets, and computers, these emerging forms of entertainment, are eroding the television's territory at an alarming pace. Once bustling television programs are gradually forgotten, with declining power-on rates, let alone viewership. So, what's wrong with the television industry today? Where will it go from here?
I. The Decline of the Television Empire
At the end of the 20th century, the television set was one of the three essential household items, its status being "King of Entertainment." People would come home from work, the greatest pleasure being to gather around the television set and watch news, variety shows, and TV dramas. In those days, the television set carried people's thirst for information, and their pursuit of entertainment.
By the end of 1990, China had 509 television stations, with a television penetration rate of 79.4%. Almost 8 out of every 10 families had a television set. In terms of annual output, China surpassed Japan to become the world's leading producer of television sets. The television industry at the time was thriving, a scene of great prosperity.
In order to compete for ratings, major television stations racked their brains, producing countless classic programs that are still talked about today. From the early "Walk into Science" series to the later "Tan Tan Traffic," television programs brought people countless joy and enlightenment.
However, the television industry is now in a predicament, its former glory gone.
II. The "Winter" of the Television Industry
According to the "2024 China Smart TV Interaction New Trend Report," the power-on rate of television sets has dropped from 70% in 2016 to less than 30% today. In just eight years, the power-on rate of television sets has been halved, signaling that the television industry is experiencing an unprecedented "winter."
The decline of the television industry can be attributed to several factors:
- Excessive number of television stations, severe homogeneity of programs. Currently, China has 389 prefecture-level and above television stations, 2099 county-level television stations, and 33 educational television stations. The sheer number of television stations results in varying levels of program quality and severe homogeneity. Faced with so many choices, viewers find it difficult to find programs that truly attract them, ultimately choosing to turn off the television.
- The rise of mobile phones has had a huge impact on the television industry. Mobile phones have become an indispensable companion for modern people, providing various forms of entertainment anytime, anywhere. Major video apps have made chasing dramas incredibly convenient. The rise of short video platforms also aligns better with people's fragmented lifestyles. Under the impact of various forms of entertainment, the television set has gradually lost its appeal.
- Smart television sets are complex to operate and expensive. Today's smart television sets are quite complex to operate for many young people. Lengthy boot-up advertisements, cumbersome system settings, and various remote controls are all headaches. In addition, the paid system for television programs and video software also discourages viewers.
III. How Can the Television Industry Break Out?
Faced with this harsh reality, how can the traditional television industry break out?
- Create differentiated programs to attract viewers' attention. Television stations need to break away from homogeneous competition and create more innovative and differentiated programs to attract viewers' attention.
- Embrace short videos to expand new areas. Television stations can try exploring the short video field, producing more concise videos that can grab viewers' attention.
- Optimize user experience to increase user stickiness. Television stations need to simplify operational processes and optimize user experience, allowing viewers to watch programs effortlessly and enjoyably.
- Explore new business models to seek new profit models. Television stations need to explore new business models, such as product placement, paid memberships, etc., to achieve profitability.
IV. The Future of the Television Industry
The future of the television industry is full of challenges and opportunities. Only by continuously innovating and actively embracing change can we stand tall in the fiercely competitive market.
Television set, are you really destined to become a tear of the times?
