HarmonyOS's Difficult "Breakthrough": Can the Domestic Operating System Break the Gridlock?
HarmonyOS, the domestic operating system, finally made its official debut in 2024. However, this beacon of hope for domestic technology doesn't seem to be as smooth sailing as anticipated. Huawei, the tech giant, poured massive resources, investing thousands of engineers and years of development into this so-called "autonomous and controllable" operating system. But HarmonyOS, upon its arrival, has found itself in a predicament with "nothing to cook with," as its app ecosystem struggles to keep pace, becoming its biggest obstacle to development.
An Ecological Dilemma From Zero
The main challenge faced by HarmonyOS stems from the scarcity of its app ecosystem. An operating system without a rich array of apps is like an empty shell incapable of attracting users. Users download HarmonyOS, only to find their go-to apps missing, leading to inevitable disappointment. While HarmonyOS supports Android app compatibility, the experience is noticeably inferior to native apps. It's like wearing someone else's shoes they just don't feel as comfortable as your own.
More importantly, many app developers lack the motivation to create dedicated apps for HarmonyOS, as the user base is still small, resulting in a poor return on investment. One developer friend lamented, "Our company doesn't dare to jump on the HarmonyOS bandwagon; what if it flops? We're already busy juggling Android and iOS, adding HarmonyOS would stretch us too thin!"
The Dilemma for Smartphone Manufacturers
Smartphone manufacturers are a crucial piece of the puzzle for HarmonyOS's promotion. However, choosing HarmonyOS isn't a simple decision for these manufacturers. Years of development within the Android ecosystem mean switching sides would mean abandoning years of accumulated experience. The mature Android ecosystem, with its wealth of apps and vast user base, offers advantages that are not easily discarded.
One industry insider stated, "Asking us to abandon Android for HarmonyOS is like asking us to commit suicide. What if HarmonyOS doesn't take off? We'd be left with nothing." This choice presents a dilemma for smartphone manufacturers. Supporting a domestic operating system is a matter of national pride, but businesses must consider profitability. A hasty, full-scale shift to HarmonyOS could lead to significant losses if market response is poor.
Consumer Confidence Concerns
Ultimately, the success of any operating system hinges on consumer acceptance. However, for the average user, HarmonyOS remains an "unknown entity." Many consumers worry about missing apps, unfamiliar operation, and system stability. These anxieties inevitably influence consumer choices.
The smartphone market is already quite mature, making efforts to change user habits a daunting task. For HarmonyOS to gain consumer trust, it has a long road ahead.
Opportunities and Challenges for Future Development
While HarmonyOS faces many challenges, its potential cannot be denied. Huawei, as a tech giant, has a proven track record in technological prowess. HarmonyOS's distributed architecture design offers unique features that enable seamless multi-device connectivity, giving it a significant edge in the Internet of Things era. For example, users can directly control smart home devices with their smartphones, even project their phone screens onto their TVs. These features are quite attractive.
However, translating technological advantages into market dominance requires time and effort. Huawei needs to invest more in fostering developers, enriching the app ecosystem, and actively collaborating with other manufacturers to expand HarmonyOS's influence. Some industry experts predict that HarmonyOS may first achieve breakthroughs in areas like smart home and connected vehicles. These emerging fields are less competitive, allowing HarmonyOS's strengths to shine through more easily.
A Long and Winding Road
Overall, HarmonyOS's journey to success will inevitably be fraught with challenges. It faces obstacles in ecosystem building, market promotion, and user education. However, we shouldn't lose faith in domestic operating systems. After all, technological advancement is a long-term process that can't be achieved overnight. The emergence of HarmonyOS at least provides us with a new option and opens a path for the development of domestic operating systems.
Will HarmonyOS ultimately succeed? It's too early to say for sure. However, its development is certainly worth continued monitoring. After all, who knows, maybe one day it will truly become the "black technology" that changes our lives.
