Dawn of Artificial General Intelligence: Baidu CTO Wang Haifeng's Vision for the Future

From October 22nd to 24th, the 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum, hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology, was held in Beijing. Baidu's Chief Technology Officer and National Outstanding Engineer, Wang Haifeng, attended the opening ceremony and the thematic session on "AI Governance Innovation for Cultivating a Technological Governance Ecosystem and Building International Trust." He believes that the maturity and decreasing barriers of agent technology will drive the explosive growth of large model applications, and the dawn of artificial general intelligence (AGI) has already emerged.

Wang Haifeng pointed out that artificial intelligence has made significant progress in recent years. The Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry in 2024 were awarded to AI scientists, demonstrating the disruptive impact of AI on related fields. As AI continues to empower various industries and intertwines with various disciplines, the paradigm of scientific research will undergo a revolutionary transformation.

Large Models: The Dawn of Artificial General Intelligence

Wang Haifeng believes that large models bring a glimmer of hope for AGI, mainly due to their technical universality and comprehensive capabilities:

  • Technical Universality: Large models are continuously improving in their ability to handle diverse tasks, languages, modalities, and scenarios. This means they are no longer confined to specific domains and can be applied to a wider range of applications.
  • Comprehensive Capabilities: Understanding, generation, logic, and memory are the four fundamental capabilities of AI. Other typical AI abilities, such as creation, problem-solving, coding, planning, and decision-making, are built upon these four foundations. The advancements in these four areas for large models will bring them closer to achieving AGI.

ERNIE: Baidu's Exploration of Artificial General Intelligence

Wang Haifeng introduced that Baidu released ERNIE 1.0 in March 2019, which has since evolved into ERNIE 4.0 Turbo. ERNIE learns from trillions of data and hundreds of billions of knowledge, breaking through the barriers of knowledge internalization and application. This has significantly enhanced the model's performance and efficiency.

Based on ERNIE, Baidu launched ERNIE Bot, which has surpassed 300 million users. ERNIE has a daily call volume exceeding 700 million and processes more than 1 trillion text tokens per day. ERNIE has been applied across various industries, empowering the transformation and upgrade of agriculture, manufacturing, energy, transportation, finance, education, healthcare, media, and more.

Agent Technology: Driving the Explosion of Large Model Applications

Wang Haifeng emphasized that agent technology is crucial for expanding the capabilities of large models, lowering the barrier to adoption, and driving the explosive growth of AI applications. ERNIE's knowledge-augmented large model pushes the boundaries of agent technology based on reasoning models. It includes understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution, enabling the use of tools to complete complex tasks and self-evolve through interactions with the environment.

Future Trends in AI: The Law of Scale Remains Valid

Looking ahead at the development of AI, Wang Haifeng believes that the law of scale will remain valid for the next few years, leading to stronger capabilities through higher-quality and larger-scale data, as well as larger models. Large language models still have room for improvement, and multimodal unified large models will become more user-friendly and practical.

Human-Centered: AI for Good, Accelerating the Arrival of the Intelligent Era

Wang Haifeng concluded by emphasizing that AI development should be human-centered, adhering to the principle of AI for good. By driving innovation, we can accelerate the arrival of the intelligent era.

The maturity of large model technologies and breakthroughs in agent technology have brought the dawn of AGI and opened up more possibilities for intelligent upgrades across various industries. In the future, AI will deeply intertwine with various disciplines, driving continuous innovation in scientific research paradigms and bringing more positive impacts to human society.

Summary

At the World Science and Technology Development Forum, Baidu's CTO Wang Haifeng stated that the increasing maturity of agent technology will drive the explosion of large model applications, and AGI has already shown signs of emergence. ERNIE, Baidu's exploration in the field of AGI, has been applied across various industries, empowering intelligent upgrades. In the future, higher-quality and larger-scale data, as well as larger models, will lead to stronger capabilities, and multimodal unified large models will become more user-friendly and practical. The development of AI will be human-centered and adhere to the principle of AI for good, accelerating the arrival of the intelligent era.
