The train number coding system of China Railway uses a series of simple English alphabet to express different train types, making it easier for passengers to understand the trains they take. When you receive the ticket, the first letter represents the type of train, allowing you to choose the appropriate one.
The following are 10 common train number codes and their meanings:
1. G - High speed Multiple unit
The beginning of G refers to high-speed Multiple unit (GaoSuDongCheZu), also known as "Fu-Hsing Semi-Express". These trains are designed to operate on high-speed railways and achieve a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour by controlling speed (air flow within 30 kilometers per hour) and reducing air resistance between tracks and carriages. High speed Multiple unit usually travel a short distance, but they run very fast, which is one of the first choices for many people to travel.
2. D-high-speed train
D refers to "DongChe", short for electric Multiple unit. Compared with G, high-speed trains are suitable for travel with a mileage of less than 200 kilometers, high demand, and a close distance between the starting and ending stations. Like G, they have self-service ticket machines, more comfortable seats, and a buffet car, making them the preferred choice for many travelers.
3. C-intercity high-speed train
Intercity high-speed trains are a type of G, representing "intercity passenger transportation", mainly operated on intercity high-speed railways. These models have undergone optimized and improved design and manufacturing, with faster speeds than traditional high-speed railway trains and more advanced facilities. Unlike D and G, they may sometimes need to pass through relatively long routes, so the journey is usually slightly longer, but there are fewer terminal stations.
4. Z-Direct Express
Z refers to ZhiDaTeKuai, which typically operates on long-distance railway lines between large cities and major cities. These models often have fast driving speeds and can provide a high-quality travel experience. Direct express trains usually have fewer stops than other models because these trains need to transport a large number of people as quickly as possible.
5. T-Express
T represents TeKuai, which typically stops at multiple stations in distant areas, including some major city express stops. Express trains are usually used as medium distance trains, often operating within provinces or between regions. They are relatively slow or stable trains, but their prices are relatively more affordable.
6. K-Fast
K represents KuaiSu, which is a medium speed train that usually stops at many stations. They are faster than local trains, but generally much slower than fast and high-speed Multiple unit. Fast trains travel between provinces and regions, operating farther than regular railways. This type of vehicle is basically one of the means of transportation from one place to another.
7. N-express regular train
N stands for "TeJiPuTongLieChe", sometimes also known as "PuExpress". As a type of train with a speed between express and local trains, they usually travel a long distance. There are more stops for express regular trains, which can accommodate more passengers and offer more affordable prices. The travel experience of this model is relatively low-key, but it is one of the must-have options for travel.
8. L - L-series trains
L is the abbreviation of "L-series trains" (LinShiLuKeLieChe), which refers to the train arranged to run temporarily. This type of vehicle is usually added during holidays and traditional golden weeks, and will be urgently deployed in situations such as large-scale events and natural disasters. L-series trains generally do not need to be booked in advance, but there may be fewer stops from one place to another.
9. Y-Tourist train
Y represents the tourism train (LuYouLieChe), which is specifically designed to serve the tourism community. Their carriages usually have a seating area and a sleeping area. Tourist trains often offer beautiful scenery, unique cuisine and beverages, and a variety of entertainment options such as chess and card rooms, football fields, casinos, etc.
10. A - Other Types
The beginning of A indicates other types of train numbers (QiTaLeiXing), usually referring to services that are not used by ordinary passengers, such as special freight trains, debugging trains, and industrial trains.
In short, China's train transportation system provides passengers with various options. By understanding the meaning of train number codes, passengers can better choose the most suitable mode of travel for themselves.
