Scientists have found that the levels of toxic metals and trace elements in fruit juices and soft drinks are increasing

A recent study conducted by Tulane University found that the content of toxic metals in some popular drinks exceeded the federal standard for safe drinking water. The investigation tested 60 beverages and found that the content of a certain toxic metal in 5 of them was higher than the safety value specified by federal standards. The report indicates that two types of fruit juices have arsenic levels exceeding the standard of 10 micrograms per liter. In addition, the cadmium content of a cranberry juice, a mixed fruit and Carrot juice, and an oat milk exceeded the standard of 3 parts per billion.
According to a study by Tulane University, the content of toxic metals in some popular drinks has exceeded the federal drinking water standards, posing a potential health risk, especially for children.
The drinks sampled included common drinks in grocery stores -- single juice and mixed juice, Plant milk, soda water and tea, which were detected to contain 25 different toxic metals and trace elements. According to the research results published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, the concentration of toxic metals in mixed fruit juice and Plant milk (such as oatmeal milk and almond milk) is higher than that in other drinks.
Tewodros Godebo, the first author of the study and assistant professor of environmental health science at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine of Tulane University, said that the study was very important because there were few Peer review studies to detect the content of American beverages.
Surprisingly, there is not much research on toxic and essential elements in American soft drinks. This makes us realize that more research is needed
The consumption of these soft drinks is usually lower than that of water, which means that the health risk for adults is likely to be very low. But Godebo said that parents should be cautious when providing drinks to their children.
"People should avoid giving infants a lot of mixed juice or Plant milk," Godebo said. "Arsenic, lead and cadmium are known Carcinogen, and have been proved to cause visceral damage and cognitive damage to children, especially in early brain development."
Most of the elements found in beverages may come from contaminated soil. These metals are naturally present and therefore difficult to completely remove.
Hannah Stoner and Julia Ashmead, students from Tulane University who participated in the study, said they hoped that these findings would encourage people to think more about their diet.
Stoner said, "I don't think people need to be afraid." In terms of toxicity, dosage is often the determining factor, so everything needs to be moderate. But this makes people realize that more research is needed.
The next step for researchers will be to conduct risk assessments based on the collected data to understand the impact of consuming toxic metals on children and adults.
Godebo said, "We would like to continue exploring which toxic metals are present in beverages and food sold commercially to consumers
