In combination with the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Ecological Protection Law passed at the second meeting of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress in April this year, this scientific research focused on the natural resources and ecological environment characteristics of the source of the Yangtze River, specifically carrying out scientific research projects such as the temporal and spatial distribution of water and sediment characteristics of the source rivers, estimation of carbon reserves of the source wetlands, impact of frozen thawing changes in plateau permafrost, and detection of the thickness of glacier permafrost, in-depth research and analysis of climate change in the source of the Yangtze River Topics such as hydrology and water resources, evolution of glaciers and permafrost, and carbon sinks in ecosystems.
As an important component of the ecosystem of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the Yangtze River source and Lancang River source areas are sensitive response areas to climate change and fragile ecological environments, which have a significant impact on the stability of the basin's climate system, water resource protection, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem security.
The scientific research on the source of the Yangtze River has been carried out every year since 2012. It is one of the most frequently conducted and widely covered scientific research activities in the source area of the Yangtze River to find out the ecological "background" and study the law of change.
According to Xu Ping, the chief engineer of the Yangtze River Academy of Sciences, this scientific expedition will further understand the current situation of the ecological environment in the Yangtze River source and Lancang River source areas, provide basic data for the Yangtze River protection, the construction of the Sanjiangyuan National Park, the evolution of the Yangtze River source and Lancang Jiangyuan District's "water ecology environment" and the study of adaptive protection countermeasures, and better play the supporting role of scientific research in the ecological protection of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.
On the day of the launch of the scientific research, the scientific research team members from the Institute of Rivers and the Institute of Water Environment of the Yangtze River Academy of Sciences took samples of Suspended load sediment, riverbed sediment, plankton and other samples in the Zhimenda reach.
