China Southern Airlines' A380 Super Big Mac has come to an end, and in less than twelve years, it has come to an end. In the early morning of November 8th, the B-6139 A380 passenger plane returned to Guangzhou from Los Angeles, marking the end of China Southern Airlines' A380 flight and the end of China's A380 era.
However, why is this spacious and comfortable aircraft not popular in the market? Although passengers have a pleasant experience with the A380, it may become a negative asset for airlines. The large size brings high operating costs, and the design of the four engines also leads to high fuel consumption, which makes the A380's requirements for high occupancy and high ticket prices exceptionally high.
The reality of China's domestic route market makes it difficult for China Southern Airlines to fully utilize the A380 to expand international routes. Domestic routes account for the main share of revenue, so for a period of time, China Southern Airlines attempted to use the A380 for domestic routes. However, even on domestic routes, the ticket prices of the A380 are prohibitively high, which is not practical for those who need to travel and seek reimbursement.
The international situation is also not optimistic, although some international airlines have reopened their A380 flights, Airbus has already ceased production of the A380. The production volume of this highly praised jumbo aircraft by passengers is far lower than Boeing's 737 and A320 series models.
As for the A380 being sent to the "airplane cemetery" in the United States after its retirement, this is actually a common fate of renting airplanes. The airline does not own the ownership of these aircraft, so when the lease expires or is no longer needed, the aircraft must be returned to the lessee. The lessee has the right to decide on their own how to dispose of these aircraft, just like renting a car and not being able to own it.
Therefore, the end of the A380 is a result of market demand and economic considerations. Although it left a deep impression on passengers, continuing to operate the A380 may no longer be feasible for airlines.
However, there has been widespread discussion about the final destination of these A380 aircraft. Why was China's A380 ultimately sent to the "airplane cemetery" in the United States and dismantled?
This issue involves the complexity of the aviation industry and the interaction of global supply chains. As one of the world's largest manufacturing countries, China manufactured many parts of the A380, but these parts were transported to Europe for assembly, ultimately forming the A380 passenger plane. Due to limitations in contracts and technical details, maintenance and repair work is usually carried out by subsidiaries or partners of Airbus.
Therefore, when China's A380 aircraft retire, their repair and maintenance costs become extremely expensive. Due to the global dispersion of these aircraft components, Chinese airlines find it difficult to effectively manage this vast supply chain. This situation prompted the airline to decide to send these A380 aircraft to the "aircraft cemetery" in the United States, where more professional equipment and technology are available to efficiently dismantle and recycle these aircraft.
In addition, the dismantling and recycling of aircraft have also brought some economic opportunities. The components of abandoned aircraft can be recycled and reused, which helps reduce the overall environmental impact and to some extent reduces the losses of airlines. The "airplane cemetery" in the United States is famous for its highly specialized dismantling work, which is one of the reasons why China chose to send the A380 there.
Although the retirement of the A380 represents the end of an era, it also reflects the continuous evolution of the aviation industry and considerations of economic reality. Comfortable and magnificent aircraft designs may capture the hearts of passengers, but from a business perspective, airlines must balance operating costs with profits. Therefore, although we may miss the A380, the aviation industry is still constantly seeking more cost-effective solutions to meet market demand.
