On October 18th, NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun, dressed in his iconic black leather jacket, made another appearance in Taipei, this time alongside Foxconn Chairman Liu Yangwei at the annual technology exhibition at Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industries Co., Ltd.).
Foxconn, the world's largest electronics manufacturing outsourcing company, announced that it will use NVIDIA chips and software to build a new data center for the development of autonomous vehicle, autonomous robots and industrial robots. Huang Renxun stated that the two companies will jointly build these "artificial intelligence factories".
A new type of manufacturing industry has emerged - intelligent production. The data center for producing intelligence is the artificial intelligence factory, "Huang Renxun added, adding that Foxconn has the expertise and scale to build these factories globally.
Huang Renxun presented a hand drawn sketch explaining how the "artificial intelligence factory" continuously receives and processes data from autonomous electric vehicles, making them more intelligent. He stated that the entire end-to-end system is currently being built, on the one hand, to build an advanced electric vehicle with an artificial intelligence brain inside, enabling it to drive autonomously and interact with drivers and passengers. On the other hand, it is complemented by the construction of an artificial intelligence factory for developing software for this car.
Huang Renxun presented a hand drawn sketch explaining how the "artificial intelligence factory" continuously receives and processes data from autonomous electric vehicles, making them more intelligent.
This car will experience its life and collect more data. This data will be sent to an artificial intelligence factory. The artificial intelligence factory will improve software and update the entire artificial intelligence fleet. "Huang Renxun said," In the future, every company and industry will have an artificial intelligence factory
The "artificial intelligence factory" mentioned by Huang Renxun is expected to become a direct competitor to Tesla Dojo supercomputers. Dojo is used to train Tesla's neural networks, which are used to support, train, and improve 'fully autonomous driving' (FSD, Tesla's driving assistance system). Tesla CEO Elon Musk hopes that FSD can ultimately achieve true fully autonomous driving, which requires Dojo's powerful computing power. Tesla currently uses a large GPU supercomputer based on NVIDIA, but it is said that the new Dojo will be customized and built using Tesla designed chips.
Nvidia stated in a statement that its artificial intelligence factory to be built will use Nvidia chips and software, including its cutting-edge GH200 superchip, which is prohibited from being sold in China. It is worth noting that NVIDIA stated on October 17th local time that the latest export restrictions in the United States will also prevent the sale of two weaker high-end artificial intelligence chips (A800 and H800) and a top-level gaming chip produced by the company for the Chinese market.
Foxconn is the largest manufacturer of Apple's iPhone, and the company hopes to replicate its success in assembling personal computers and smartphones by producing electric cars for other companies. This cooperation between Foxconn and Nvidia is based on the partnership announced in January this year: the two sides cooperate to develop a platform for autonomous vehicle. Foxconn will produce automotive electronic control units (ECUs) based on Nvidia DRIVEOrin chips and sell them to the global market.
As part of this collaboration, Foxconn has gradually launched a ready-made electric vehicle platform for car manufacturers to purchase. The company stated that the cars produced as contract manufacturers will use NVIDIA's DriveHyperion9 platform, which not only includes DriveThor, but also a set of sensors such as cameras, radar, LiDAR, and ultrasound, which are essential for autonomous driving functions.
Liu Yangwei, standing next to Huang Renxun, said that Foxconn is "trying to transform from a manufacturing service company to a platform solution company". Foxconn's primary goal is to launch three platforms: smart electric vehicles, smart cities, and smart manufacturing.
On the same day, Foxconn launched a new electric truck called ModelN, which is the sixth prototype car in its electric vehicle promotion plan. The company's initial goal was to occupy a 5% share of the global electric vehicle market by 2025 and generate $33 billion in revenue from manufacturing electric vehicles and components. Its long-term goal is to produce nearly half of the world's electric vehicles, which can be considered ambitious.
Jun Seki, the head of Foxconn's electric vehicle business, stated that the company is in talks with 14 potential customers and that India and Japan are countries with broad prospects for the development of electric vehicles.
