Wang Qiang, a researcher of the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xie Guangming, a professor of the Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics Department of the School of Technology of Peking University, and other young scientists gathered in Guangzhou recently, at the Huangpu Science Popularization Forum and the Vientiane Campus Science Open Class, Explained to teenagers the cutting-edge knowledge in the field of biomimetic robotic fish and exploration of rare plants on the plateau, and shared stories and mysteries about nature.

In the world, there is no second region with diverse habitats like the Pan Himalaya, "Wang Qiang said. The Pan Himalaya region is the most unique geographical unit on Earth, with the richest alpine flora, including the Himalayas, Hengduan Mountains, Karakoram Mountains, and part of the Xingdu Kush Mountains.
Wang Qiang stated that there are over 20000 types of vascular plants growing in this area, which is two-thirds of all vascular plant species in China, twice the size of Europe as a whole, and 1.5 times the size of North America. Among the 35 biodiversity hotspots assessed by the Conservation International, there are three in the Pan Himalayas, accounting for almost one tenth.
Wang Qiang revealed that the study of plant diversity in the Pan Himalayan region is one of the most important and fundamental work in the field of plant taxonomy. As one of the most geologically unstable regions, research on plant diversity in the Pan Himalayan region is quite scarce, which is not conducive to the protection of plant diversity.
For more than a decade, Wang Qiang and his team have traveled all over the Trans Himalayan Plant Mysteries. They have discovered the alpine fritillaria that has been extinct for nearly a century, the extremely endangered yellow peony, and the Xizang yelan that can summon wild bees... They have collected more than 100000 precious plant specimens and photographed more than 200000 rare plant image data, providing important basic data for the country to master plant resources in global biodiversity hotspots.
We must have a comprehensive understanding of the plants in this area and provide the best protection for them. We must not wait until we lose them before we know them. This requires the support of everyone in society, "Wang Qiang said.
Similar to the Pan Himalayan region, there are also oceans with abundant biological resources. However, the more precious seafood is, the harder it is to catch. "Sea bumpkins" are a group of people who rely on their good diving skills to catch seafood. They are equipped with dozens of pounds of diving equipment for diving operations, and each dive is a battle against the god of death.

If we could invent underwater robots and achieve unmanned fishing, then 'sea bumpkins' wouldn't have to work so hard. So, Xie Guangming led his team to start the research and development of biomimetic robotic fish.
Why is it a biomimetic fish? Xie Guangming explained that the life skills of fish far surpass the existing navigation technology of humans: high propulsion efficiency and low energy consumption; Good maneuverability; Low noise, low ecological impact.
Xie Guangming led the team to simulate the swinging process of fish, build an electromechanical system to reproduce the principles of biological motion, and then write control software, coupled with waterproof "fish skin", to make the "fish" swim harmoniously.
Xie Guangming's team also discovered the unique underwater perception organ of fish - the lateral line system, which predicts the flow velocity and direction of water flow by sensing local subtle changes in water flow, and can further perceive whether there are obstacles, food, companions, or natural enemies ahead. So they also installed an artificial siding system for the robotic fish, which preliminarily realized the perception of partner positions.
This science open class is a youth science open class held by the Whampoa Science Popularization Forum, holding hands with the "Wanxiang Campus", open to young people in the Greater Bay Area.
