Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, November 6th (Reporter Liu Xia) - Scientists from the University of Tokyo in Japan have published a paper in the latest issue of the Physical Review Letters magazine, stating that quantum batteries are energy storage devices that can utilize quantum effects and bypass traditional causal rules to improve charging efficiency.
Researchers explain that in the classical world, causality has only one direction: if event A leads to event B, then it is clear that event B does not lead to event A. But at the quantum scale, it is impossible to determine the direction of this causal relationship, and this quantum phenomenon is called indefinite causal order. In this state, the two directions of causality are in a special quantum superposition state, where both can hold or not hold simultaneously.
The research team conducted experiments using two chargers that power quantum batteries. They calculated how much energy the battery would receive and the charging efficiency in three different scenarios. These three situations are: the charger sequentially charges the battery, simultaneously charges the battery, and due to the superposition of the first two situations, it is impossible to determine which charger is working.
The results show that even in situations where the connection between the charger and the battery is relatively weak, the last method can still provide the maximum energy to the battery in the most effective way. This means that even with suboptimal chargers, the charging process can still work well.
In addition, the team conducted principle verification experiments using quantum light, indicating that this uncertain causal order can be achieved using quantum switches.
The team led by Julio Chiribella of the University of Hong Kong, China, demonstrated the indefinite causal order using quantum switches in 2009, indicating that the fundamental ideas of quantum theory can bring practical applications.
Marcier Levinstein of the Spanish Institute of Photonics stated that although this new study is interesting, further experiments are still needed. Currently, most research on quantum batteries is theoretical, so it is important to design charging programs that can be tested through experiments.
