Self developed chips are one of the hottest topics in the technology industry. With Huawei chips being suppressed by the United States and many restrictions imposed by the United States on Chinese chips, the public has raised many expectations for self developed chips. I hope more domestic manufacturers can join the team of self-developed chips.
Apart from Huawei, other OPPO, Xiaomi, and vivo all have self-developed chip projects, which is gratifying. First tier mobile phone manufacturers have joined the self-developed chip team. However, Chinese mobile phone giant OPPO announced the cessation of its "chip making" plan and the dissolution of its research and development company.
To establish a foothold in the technology industry, enterprises need to master core technologies. If they always rely on foreign technology development, they will face the risk of being stuck at any time. Whether it's software operating systems or hardware chips, the technology dominance in the United States is very high.
Fortunately, in recent years, domestic manufacturers have increased their research efforts and made consecutive breakthroughs in self-developed chips. For example, Xiaomi has launched chip products such as the Pengpai C1 and Pengpai P1, laying out its presence in the imaging and charging fields. Vivo has released its own V1 chip for use in imaging systems.
Looking at OPPO again, there are currently two chips released by OPPO, namely Mariana X and Mariana Y. The former is an imaging chip, while the latter is a Bluetooth audio SOC chip. It goes without saying that Huawei has been developing its own chips for more than a decade, and its Hisense semiconductor department once became one of the top ten semiconductor companies in the world.
Among these mobile phone manufacturers' self-developed chip projects, one has already chosen to give up, not Huawei, which has been subject to chip sanctions, but OPPO.

According to public information, ZEKU is a chip company under OPPO, established in 2019. Its business scope includes semiconductor design, semiconductor components, and chips.
The Mariana X and Y launched by OPPO were created by ZEKU. As OPPO abandoned its ZEKU business, it was equivalent to stopping the "chip making" program, and the path of self-developed chips came to an end. After all, the research and development companies have been dissolved, and I'm afraid OPPO doesn't plan to continue developing its own chip project. Even on OPPO's official website, there are no introductions about the two self-developed chips.
Seeing the news that OPPO has stopped its self-developed chip project, I believe many people have mixed feelings in their hearts. After finally achieving some results, why do they give up when they give up.
It can only be said that the self-developed chip is not as simple as expected, which requires high technical strength, experience and resources, including computer architecture design, chip manufacturing process, packaging and testing knowledge. In addition, the patent and intellectual property issues related to self-developed chips are also very complex, requiring a lot of time and effort to solve.
At the same time, the research and development cost of self-developed chips is also very high, requiring a large amount of capital and human resources to be invested, and it takes a long time to complete.
The world's top chip companies, whether in design, manufacturing, or packaging, have spent over ten to twenty years of layout time, investing tens of billions of dollars in capital expenditures. Moreover, chip research and development does not necessarily mean that the return on investment is the same. The chips designed by OPPO from manufacturing to commercial use still need to undergo testing in the consumer market.
In other words, chips are commodities that need to be sold well and earn money before they can continue to operate. OPPO uses self-developed chips for its own high-end phones, and sales are not outstanding. In addition to increasing core technology levels and saving face, the true returns on revenue are far less than research and development investment.
Not everyone can sustain a loss making business. Without profits, how to maintain the R&D team, R&D projects cannot keep up, and if they cannot attract capital's attention, they will only sit idle.
So it's not difficult to understand why OPPO's self-developed chips have come to this stage, let alone why OPPO's self-developed chips have reached the high-end level of 6nm, which is even more difficult than other mobile phone manufacturers' ISP chips. It is difficult to maintain such a high investment chip research and development team with lower than expected returns.
Although OPPO's decision was regrettable, the result still occurred. Instead of worrying about whether OPPO's decision was right or wrong, it is better to consider how domestic manufacturers can continue to develop their own chip projects.
Perhaps income can be derived from multiple aspects, such as strengthening cooperation, strengthening cooperation with other enterprises and universities, and jointly promoting the research and development process of self-developed chips. There is also a need for diversified development. Domestic manufacturers should diversify their product research and market development, not only limited to self developed chips, but also actively expand other businesses.
In terms of market demand, domestic manufacturers should have a deep understanding of market demand, grasp market trends, and provide strong support for the research and promotion of self-developed chips.
OPPO's abandonment of self-developed chips has brought us a certain warning, and we also know how difficult it is for Huawei to adhere to self-developed chips. We hope that the consumer market can provide more support for domestic self-developed chips, so that domestic chips can go further and more stable.
