With summer approaching, the aviation market is witnessing a peak travel season. However, this year's airfare has seen a significant "dive," with some people even discovering a price drop of over 3,000 the night before their flight! Faced with this situation, many are confused: Can I still get a refund? How can I minimize losses?
Recently, a netizen shared their successful "buy low, refund high" experience. At the end of May, netizen "Cauliflower" purchased round-trip tickets from Shanghai to Sanya on China Eastern Airlines App for June 23rd. This included 5 adult tickets and 1 child ticket, totaling over 15,000. However, on the evening of June 22nd, they discovered that the price had dropped by over 3,000. Upon learning about the free refund option, they decided to proceed with the "buy low, refund high" operation.
"Cauliflower" first purchased the lower-priced tickets and then canceled the original high-priced order for check-in. After completing their trip on June 28th, they contacted China Eastern Airlines. The customer service representative requested them to submit an application on the App and provide a work order number. After a week of review, the refund was successfully credited to their account on July 5th. While the review process was relatively lengthy, "Cauliflower" was pleasantly surprised by the full refund. "Initially, I just wanted to try asking," they said. They added that customer service informed them that their tickets were eligible for a full refund due to the price fluctuation policy, allowing for "buy low, refund high." However, they were unsure of the specific policy details.
In fact, many airlines have introduced similar "buy low, refund high" policies. These permit passengers to repurchase a lower-priced ticket within 24 hours of their initial purchase through the same booking channel. The original ticket can be refunded free of charge if certain conditions are met.
China Eastern Airlines
China Eastern Airlines customer service confirmed that the "buy low, refund high" price fluctuation policy currently applies only to domestic flights, excluding international flights and connecting flights. Passengers are eligible for a free refund on their original ticket if they repurchase a ticket through the same booking channel within 24 hours of their initial purchase, fulfilling specific conditions.
China Southern Airlines
China Southern Airlines customer service explained that if the ticketing time for two tickets falls within a 24-hour window, the "buy low, refund high" policy applies. This allows for a full refund on the higher-priced ticket for the same passenger, date, and itinerary. However, it's important to note that this policy only applies to domestic flights. International flights, group tickets, mileage redemption tickets, and other scenarios are not eligible. The policy remains effective regardless of whether the passenger has checked in or not and can be used multiple times.
Xiamen Airlines
Xiamen Airlines customer service indicated that domestic flights currently support the "buy low, refund high" policy. Passengers can request a full refund on the higher-priced ticket if they have purchased both a high-priced ticket and a low-priced ticket with identical flight dates, flight numbers, and itineraries. Additionally, the passenger's documents and name information should remain unchanged. Passengers can contact customer service for a full refund. It's important to note that the refund must be processed before the flight's departure and is not subject to restrictions based on the booking platform.
Other Airlines
Not all airlines support the "buy low, refund high" policy. Shandong Airlines does not currently offer this policy but may provide a voucher compensation depending on the situation. Upon contacting Spring Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, Hainan Airlines, and other airlines, customer service representatives confirmed that they do not currently have this policy. Ticket prices are subject to real-time market fluctuations, and refunds may incur processing fees. Refunds on high-priced tickets are not free. Air China also does not have a "buy low, refund high" policy. However, on February 2nd, they introduced a new free refund policy. Registered App users received two international and regional refund vouchers, entitling each person to two free refunds per year.
Currently, third-party platforms do not offer similar options.
Note:
- The "buy low, refund high" policy is not supported by all airlines and is only applicable to domestic flights.
- Refund requests must be processed before the flight's departure. Contact airline customer service for specific time restrictions.
- Tickets that meet the refund criteria are eligible for a full refund. However, review times may vary.
- After purchasing tickets, it's recommended to closely monitor price changes to take advantage of the "buy low, refund high" option promptly.
In conclusion, the "buy low, refund high" policy provides consumers with an opportunity to save money. However, it's crucial to be aware of the relevant policies and procedures to avoid unnecessary losses. Before purchasing tickets, it's advisable to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the airline's policies and consult customer service to ensure a smooth "buy low, refund high" experience.
