Huawei: From a 20,000 Yuan Start to a Global Tech Giant, the Secret Weapon is Independent Innovation
Huawei, a company founded in 1987 with just 20,000 yuan by Ren Zhengfei and a team of 8, has grown into a leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) solutions through over three decades of independent innovation and tireless efforts. Today, Huawei has 197,000 employees, operating in over 170 countries and regions worldwide, serving over 3 billion people. Huawei's independently developed 5G technology leads the world, strengthening China's position in technology and solidifying its status as a true national company.
Huawei has overcome numerous challenges, defeating major telecommunications giants from Europe and America, including Siemens of Germany, Motorola of the United States, Alcatel of France, and Nortel Networks of Canada, to ultimately ascend to the peak of global technology. This success is underpinned by Huawei's unwavering commitment to independent innovation and its renowned investment in research and development (R&D).
Huawei dedicates over 10% of its annual revenue to R&D. For instance, in 2020, Huawei generated 809 billion yuan in revenue, with 141.9 billion yuan invested in R&D. As of the end of 2020, Huawei held over 100,000 patents worldwide, demonstrating its powerful R&D capabilities.
Huawei's remarkable achievements are inseparable from Ren Zhengfei's emphasis on R&D. He consistently emphasizes that "technology is the primary productive force" and has invested heavily in building a strong R&D team and system. Currently, Huawei has established a global R&D network, setting up R&D centers in countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Turkey, and India. It also has nine R&D centers in China:
1. Beijing Research Institute: Founded in 1995, it's one of Huawei's earliest research institutes, primarily focusing on R&D in communication technologies, software development, and network security.
2. Shanghai Research Institute: Established in 1996, it specializes in R&D in wireless communication, terminal devices, and cloud computing, serving as Huawei's R&D hub in Shanghai.
3. Nanjing Research Institute: Founded in 1999, it focuses on R&D in optical communication, data communication, and network equipment, laying the foundation for Huawei's development in optical communication.
4. Xi'an Research Institute: Founded in 2000, it's dedicated to R&D in software development, network security, and data centers, providing technological support for Huawei in software and network security.
5. Chengdu Research Institute: Founded in 2000, it specializes in R&D in wireless communication, terminal devices, and chip design, serving as Huawei's R&D center in Southwest China.
6. Hangzhou Research Institute: Founded in 2005, it primarily focuses on R&D in cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence, providing crucial support for Huawei's development in cloud computing.
7. Wuhan Research Institute: Founded in 2006, it's dedicated to R&D in communication technologies, software development, and network security, providing technical support for Huawei in Central China.
8. Suzhou Research Institute: Founded in 2012, it specializes in R&D in wireless communication, terminal devices, and chip design, serving as Huawei's R&D center in East China.
9. Changchun Research Institute: Founded in 2020, it focuses on R&D in optical communication, data communication, and network equipment, adding a crucial force to Huawei's R&D layout in Northeast China.
It's worth noting that the cities where Huawei chooses to establish research institutes are often those with a high concentration of universities. Cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, and Suzhou boast numerous 985 and 211 universities. Huawei "takes advantage of local resources" by attracting a large number of university graduates, allowing these talented individuals to join Huawei without having to relocate to Shenzhen.
Currently, Huawei is preparing to establish research institutes in Guangzhou and Hefei. The first phase of the Guangzhou Research Institute is expected to be completed and put into operation in September 2024. In the future, Huawei will continue to expand its R&D network and establish R&D centers in more fields, providing a constant source of power for its ongoing innovation and development.
Huawei's success lies not only in its powerful R&D capabilities but also in its unwavering commitment to independent innovation. Whether facing market competition or external pressure, Huawei has consistently adhered to independent R&D, continuously breaking through technological barriers and ultimately achieving remarkable accomplishments. Huawei's development journey has set an example for Chinese technology companies and injected strong confidence into China's technological development.
