From "Underachiever" to Global Robotics Leader: The Legendary Rise of Wang Xingxing
In today's rapidly developing technological world, the story of a Chinese "underachiever" who developed a robot that became a global leader in the robotics market sounds like a fairy tale, but it's actually true. This is Wang Xingxing, a young man from Zhejiang, who carved his own path to success in the crowded robotics field with his unique perspective and strong execution.
In 2009, when most people were still skeptical about robots, Wang Xingxing was already building them. His achievements even earned the admiration of Jensen Huang, the founder of NVIDIA, and tech giants like Amazon and Google were vying for his products. In the capital markets, his company was equally sought after, with renowned investment institutions like Sequoia China, Jingwei China, and Meituan extending investment offers. As the ancient saying goes, "A hero doesn't ask where he comes from," does Wang Xingxing's legendary story redefine your understanding of success? Let's delve into the story behind this "underachiever's" rise.
Wang Xingxing graduated from Zhejiang University of Technology. His academic background wasn't particularly impressive in the robotics circle, where 985 and 211 graduates are commonplace. This young man from Ningbo, born in the 90s, developed his interest in science from science fiction movies. From a young age, he was curious about science, physics, chemistry, and other fields and exhibited extraordinary hands-on abilities. Unlike other children who drew pictures, he amazed his teachers with the meticulous detail in his artwork. Wang Xingxing had a passion for handicraft from a young age. He continuously increased the number of his creations, and his skills continued to improve. Although he didn't excel in English and Chinese, he found immense satisfaction in practical hands-on projects.
After graduating from high school, due to his severe academic shortcomings, he only managed to get into Zhejiang University of Technology. During his senior year, he attempted to pursue a postgraduate degree but failed to meet the English requirements and missed the opportunity to attend Zhejiang University. He eventually chose Shanghai University, which was closer to his hometown. Despite facing numerous challenges in his academic journey, Wang Xingxing never let go of his dreams.
During his undergraduate studies, Wang Xingxing gained some local fame for his entrepreneurial spirit. After transferring to Shanghai University, he poured all his energy into robot making, even with limited funding. He independently completed the entire process of design, control, algorithms, and hardware, creating the robotic dog XDOG. This robot helped him secure second place in the Shanghai Robot Design Competition, winning him 80,000 yuan, while his development cost was less than 20,000 yuan. This not only brought Wang Xingxing his first income from his entrepreneurial journey but also reinforced his belief that robots held the key to his path to wealth.
After graduating with a master's degree, Wang Xingxing didn't rush into starting his own business. After all, he was still an unknown entity in the tech world, and it wouldn't be easy to secure angel investment. He chose to join DJI, a renowned drone company at the time, to gain experience and improve his skills.
In 2016, Wang Xingxing finally got his big break with his robot, gaining widespread attention in the tech industry. This young entrepreneur with passion in his eyes decisively left his position at DJI and firmly embarked on his entrepreneurial journey. That same year, Unitree Robotics was officially established. The startup focused its research and development of its first products on quadrupedal robotic dogs. In fact, as early as 2013, while still a graduate student, Wang Xingxing had begun to envision the concept of a quadrupedal robotic dog. He conducted extensive research and numerous experiments, ultimately deciding to commercialize this concept. During his master's studies, Wang Xingxing successfully created the first generation of quadrupedal robotic dogs.
By 2017, the following year after Unitree Robotics was founded, the quadrupedal robotic dog products had reached commercialization level and were ready to accept orders. This quadrupedal robotic dog became the breakthrough point for Wang Xingxing's business takeoff. The product's performance was excellent, and its low price shocked industry peers.
It was Unitree Robotics' quadrupedal robotic dogs that solidified Wang Xingxing's position in the tech world. During that time, Unitree Robotics, as a latecomer to the industry, faced competition from established players like Boston Dynamics, whose robots had been popular in the market for years, and Tesla's Optimus robot, which was capable of working in factories. However, these robots faced challenges in their commercialization journey. Boston Dynamics robots changed hands several times, and some products even ceased production before they were even launched. Although Musk's Optimus robot has been showcased at numerous press conferences, it has yet to achieve large-scale market sales. The estimated market price is expected to be over $20,000.
In the face of intense competition from numerous robotics giants, Unitree Robotics did not back down. Wang Xingxing's quadrupedal robotic dogs could not only dance and perform, but also participated in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics. What was even more shocking was that Unitree Robotics became a price disrupter in the industry. When overseas brands were still priced in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, Wang Xingxing had already lowered the price of robotic dogs to 99,000 yuan.
Although standing at 40 cm tall and weighing 12 kg, this seemingly clumsy robot should not be underestimated. It races across the country at a speed of 3.3 meters per second, making it the fastest robotic dog. This robotic dog not only performs various actions flexibly, such as wielding a golden cudgel, cracking walnuts, opening beverage bottles, but also easily completes backflips and even performs delicate welding tasks, all of which pose significant challenges to ordinary people.
As a result, Wang Xingxing's robots won orders from NVIDIA and even attracted Google and Amazon for cooperation negotiations, making it the talk of the tech world. Wang Xingxing won the admiration of numerous tech giants and filled Unitree Robotics' future with possibilities.
When it comes to the most promising private military enterprises in China, some nominated DJI because its drones excel in various fields and can combat tanks and armored vehicles. Why not consider Unitree Robotics? Its robots and robotic dogs could be similarly armed. Unitree Robotics' future abounds with possibilities, such as flamethrowers, machine guns, and grenades. Some predict that Unitree Robotics could become China's next "DJI" in the ground domain. The application range of Unitree Robotics goes beyond the military industry, encompassing fields like firefighting, law enforcement, chemical sampling, and extreme logistics. The application scenarios for robots are equally vast in these areas.
Twenty years ago, no one believed electric vehicles could hit the road; ten years ago, no one believed robots could replace humans. History has repeatedly proven that in the tech world, there is only the unimaginable, not the unachievable. Wang Xingxing's inspiring story isn't just a tale of individual struggle; it's a subversion of traditional notions of success. He has proven with practical action that even so-called "underachievers" can achieve brilliance at the pinnacle of technology. Unitree Robotics' quadrupedal robots are not only a technological breakthrough but also a yearning for the boundless possibilities of the future. Every young person can gain motivation from his story and courageously pursue their own dreams. As the old saying goes: The sky is the limit for birds, and the sea is vast for fish. In this era full of opportunity, who can say that the next tech star isn't you?
