The Tianshan Laboratory, Xinjiang's first provincial-level laboratory, was recently officially inaugurated. Headed by a team led by Academician Peng Suping of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and based at Xinjiang Engineering College and other universities, its launch at the Xinjiang Science and Technology Innovation Conference marks a new era for technological innovation in the region's coal industry. The laboratory aims to overcome key technological bottlenecks hindering the development of Xinjiang's coal industry, driving its transformation and upgrading towards scale, safety, intelligence, efficiency, green development, low-carbon emission, and high-quality development.
Leveraging Xinjiang's unique coal resource and geographical advantages, the Tianshan Laboratory will conduct in-depth research on major scientific and technological issues facing the region's coal industry. Its research areas encompass several key fields: safe and intelligent coal mining, clean and efficient coal processing and utilization, water resource protection and ecological restoration in coal mining areas, integration of coal and renewable energy, and coalbed methane exploration and efficient development. Six academicians in the coal field have already joined the laboratory, providing strong intellectual support and technical guarantees.
Academician Peng Suping, the leading figure of the Tianshan Laboratory, deeply understands the importance of enhancing the technological level of Xinjiang's coal industry. She believes that building a nationally and internationally influential coal science and technology platform is a pressing need for the high-quality development of Xinjiang's coal industry. Therefore, the Tianshan Laboratory will focus on addressing key technological bottlenecks restricting the development of Xinjiang's coal industry and promoting its transformation and upgrading.
At the conference, Academician Peng Suping detailed the future development plan and goals of the Tianshan Laboratory. She highlighted the laboratory's commitment to fully utilizing Xinjiang's coal resource advantages, focusing on breakthroughs in high-efficiency, safe, green, and intelligent mining technologies and their widespread application within the Xinjiang coal industry. Specifically, the laboratory aims to develop a complete set of modern mining technologies and equipment for underground coal mines with a production capacity exceeding 10 million tons, and efficient, safe, and green mining technologies and equipment for open-pit coal mines with capacities ranging from 50 to 100 million tons.
To achieve this goal, Academician Peng Suping proposed three key recommendations:
First, combining the characteristics of coal reserves in Xinjiang, master key technologies and equipment for coal development, and undertake research and development of key technologies and complete sets of equipment for the modern intelligent mining of super-large coal mines in Xinjiang. Technological innovation will elevate Xinjiang's coal production technology to internationally advanced levels, enhancing the international competitiveness of Xinjiang's coal industry. This requires in-depth research in mining technology, equipment development, and automated control, benchmarking against advanced technologies worldwide, continuously improving the efficiency and safety of coal mining in Xinjiang.
Second, explore and develop key technologies and equipment for coal-to-gas, coal-to-oil, and coal-to-chemicals, tailored to the characteristics of Xinjiang's coal quality, and their engineering applications. Through technological innovation, establish advantages in coal chemical energy utilization and resource conversion in Xinjiang, achieving efficient utilization and diversified development of coal resources. This requires in-depth research in coal chemical process technology, catalyst development, and refined product processing, actively exploring new pathways for clean and efficient coal conversion and utilization.
Third, addressing the severe carbon dioxide emissions and environmental issues resulting from large-scale coal conversion and utilization, conduct research and engineering demonstration of key technologies for geological carbon sequestration in synergy with brine extraction, promoting healthy, green, and low-carbon development of Xinjiang's coal and coal chemical industry clusters. This requires in-depth research in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, actively exploring the combination of CCUS technologies with brine extraction technologies, achieving a win-win situation in resource integrated utilization and environmental protection.
These three recommendations all point towards a single goal: achieving sustainable development of Xinjiang's coal industry. Technological innovation not only improves the utilization efficiency of coal resources but also mitigates environmental impact, driving the transition of Xinjiang's coal industry towards green and low-carbon development.
The establishment of the Tianshan Laboratory not only brings new development opportunities for Xinjiang's coal industry but also provides a new platform for technological innovation in China's coal industry. The laboratory will bring together top domestic and international talent and advanced technologies, conducting cutting-edge scientific research to provide strong technological support for the high-quality development of Xinjiang's coal industry.
The laboratory's establishment is expected to resolve a series of long-standing technological bottlenecks hindering the development of Xinjiang's coal industry, such as improving the efficiency and safety of large-scale coal mining, achieving clean and efficient coal utilization, and reducing the environmental impact of coal mining and utilization. By addressing these issues, the Tianshan Laboratory will contribute to comprehensive improvements in the scale, safety, intelligence, efficiency, greenness, and low-carbon aspects of Xinjiang's coal industry.
