Major Progress in Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield Development: Central Platform Successfully Installed
The central platform of the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield development project (Phase 1), the world's largest metamorphic buried-hill oilfield, has recently been successfully installed in the southern Bohai Sea. Built by COSL (Qingdao), the installation marks a significant advancement in the project. The successful operation is crucial for achieving the Bohai oilfield's production target of 40 million tons and ensuring national energy security.
The installed central platform (Bozhong 26-6 CEPA) is the core component of the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield development project (Phase 1), which also includes an unmanned wellhead platform (Bozhong 26-6 WHPB). The central platform is a three-tiered, eight-legged multi-functional integrated offshore oil and gas platform, combining production and living facilities. Its scale is impressive: 22.8 meters high (equivalent to an eight-story building), 86.3 meters long, and 69.1 meters wide, covering an area exceeding 14 standard basketball courts. Equipped with over 160 sets of production equipment, including advanced separators, slug catchers, and flash vapor compressors, and a living quarters accommodating 60 people, it provides a comfortable working and living environment for personnel.
The topside's design floatation weight was approximately 16,326 tons, equivalent to over 12,000 passenger cars exceeding the capacity limits of domestic offshore floating cranes. To overcome this challenge, the project team employed a "deadlift" style floating installation method, a technically demanding approach requiring extremely high precision and equipment performance.
The offshore installation faced numerous difficulties. Firstly, the harsh winter weather in the Bohai Bay, with its unpredictable conditions and fleeting weather windows, introduced significant uncertainty. Secondly, the construction site is located in a densely populated platform area with a complex network of underwater pipelines, resembling a giant "spider web," increasing the difficulty and risk. Precisely connecting the ten-thousand-ton topside to the jacket structure on the turbulent sea, leveraging tidal forces, was a monumental task. The millimeter-level precision required posed a severe challenge to barge mooring, load adjustment capabilities, and operational command.
To ensure a smooth installation, the project team made meticulous preparations. Lu Jianjian, project manager of the COSL Bozhong 26-6 installation project, explained that the team upgraded the main working vessel, "Marine Oil 228," and utilized digital tools for simulation and analysis. They optimized anchor arrangement, formulated a precise floating installation plan, and conducted multiple simulation drills to eliminate potential risks. Furthermore, the team strengthened monitoring of vessel transport status and tidal dynamics, maintaining real-time awareness of changing environmental conditions. During the floating installation, the team successfully achieved a one-time precise positioning of the topside through coordinated multi-tugboat control, demonstrating superb technical prowess and efficient teamwork.
Located in the southern Bohai Sea, approximately 170 kilometers from Tianjin, the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield has an average water depth of about 22 meters. Its reservoir is buried thousands of meters beneath the seabed in a buried hill primarily composed of metamorphic rock, making development extremely challenging. However, years of exploration and development have significantly increased the oil and gas reserves. In 2024, the field's proven geological reserves increased by over 40 million cubic meters, pushing the cumulative proven geological reserves beyond 200 million cubic meters, establishing it as the world's largest metamorphic buried-hill oilfield.
The successful implementation of the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield development project represents a new breakthrough in China's offshore oil and gas development technology and provides a solid foundation for national energy security. The team overcame numerous technical challenges, successfully installing the central platform and showcasing the ingenuity and strength of Chinese offshore engineering personnel. This success has significant guiding implications for the future development of China's offshore oil and gas industry and provides valuable experience for similar projects.
Gong Haichao, the project leader, stated that the success of Bozhong 26-6 oilfield development project (Phase 1) is attributed to the team's expertise and collaboration, as well as national support for energy security. He affirmed the team's commitment to ensuring the smooth progress of subsequent stages and contributing further to national energy security. The successful development of the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield will provide strong support for China's energy structure adjustment and economic development, setting a new benchmark for global oil and gas exploration and development. The project also offers valuable experience and lessons learned for other countries developing oilfields under similar geological conditions.
The successful floating installation of the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield's central platform is a significant achievement, marking a new high in China's offshore engineering technology and making a vital contribution to national energy security. Future offshore oil and gas development will face more challenges but also abundant opportunities. With national policy support and the dedication of technical personnel, China's offshore oil and gas industry is poised for a brighter future. The success of Bozhong 26-6 also inspires more professionals to dedicate themselves to offshore oil and gas development, safeguarding national energy security. This project is not merely an engineering success but a testament to China's offshore engineering capabilities.
