CGN's 500MW Cold Lake Wind Power Project in Qinghai Achieves Full-Capacity Grid Connection, Boosting Green and Low-Carbon Development
China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) announced the successful full-capacity grid connection of its 500-megawatt (MW) wind power project in Cold Lake, Qinghai Province. This project, one of the first batch of large-scale wind and photovoltaic projects in the sandy, gobi, and desert areas prioritized by the nation, boasts an annual power generation exceeding 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh). Its innovative application of solar thermal technology for on-site heating marks a new milestone in China's renewable energy development and utilization.
Located approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Cold Lake Town, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province, the project site presents significant challenges. Situated at a high altitude with a harsh, cold climate, it experiences an eight-month-long winter with an average annual temperature of only 4C and minimum temperatures reaching -34C. Despite these demanding conditions, CGN, leveraging its robust technical capabilities and extensive project experience, successfully overcame these obstacles to build this advanced wind power facility.
The project comprises 36 units of 5.55 MW turbines and 46 units of 6.5 MW turbines, totaling 500 MW of installed capacity. To address transient overvoltage issues stemming from the high proportion of renewable energy, the project utilizes the Northwest China's first 10 Mvar distributed air-cooled STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator). Li Zhengfeng, production and maintenance manager of CGN New Energy Qinghai Branch, explained that this equipment boasts superior transient and steady-state characteristics and reactive power regulation capabilities, enhancing the system's short-circuit capacity and ratio. This, in turn, supports large-scale renewable energy transmission and ensures the safe and stable operation of the wind farm and the Cold Lake power grid. The application of this advanced technology not only solves technical challenges but also provides valuable experience for similar projects.
To combat the frigid climate, CGN innovatively adopted "linear Fresnel" solar thermal heating technology a first for renewable energy projects above 3000 meters in high-altitude cold regions in China. Wei Ping, the field manager of the CGN New Energy Qinghai Cold Lake Guangjun 500MW wind farm, stated that this technology significantly improves the wind farm's heating safety and comfort. As a cutting-edge solar thermal technology, linear Fresnel uses an array of parallel, elongated reflectors to concentrate sunlight onto receiver tubes, heating the heat transfer medium within. The resultant thermal energy is directly used for on-site heating. The project's solar thermal field features an effective mirror area of 1800 square meters, providing heating for approximately 1600 square meters at a rate of 40 watts per square meter for office areas. This successful application not only enhances working conditions but also provides new approaches for renewable energy projects in high-altitude cold regions.
The project's commissioning will significantly benefit Qinghai Province's energy transformation and economic development. Gao Yong, Party branch secretary and deputy general manager of CGN New Energy Qinghai Branch, noted that the project annually provides the grid with 1.54 billion kWh of clean energy, equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by approximately 463,000 tons and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.246 million tons. This is crucial for lowering carbon emissions, environmental protection, and achieving sustainable development.
The project's success lies not only in its scale and advanced technology but also in its proactive exploration of solutions to the construction and operational challenges of renewable energy projects in high-altitude cold regions. CGN effectively leveraged its technological advantages, innovatively employing advanced equipment and technologies to overcome numerous obstacles. The project's successful experience will serve as valuable guidance for similar projects in other regions, promoting the healthy and rapid development of China's renewable energy industry.
CGN's technological innovation and sense of responsibility in this project deserve commendation. They are not only committed to developing clean energy and actively addressing climate change but also focused on technological innovation and sustainable development, making outstanding contributions to China's clean energy sector.
The project's successful grid connection injects new vitality into Qinghai Province's socio-economic development. The supply of clean energy will promote local industrial restructuring, drive economic transformation and upgrading, improve people's livelihoods, and facilitate Qinghai Province's goal of green and low-carbon development. This holds significant strategic importance for Qinghai Province and the nation's achievement of its "dual carbon" goals. The project not only addresses some of the region's electricity supply issues but also provides strong support for optimizing Qinghai's energy structure, further enhancing its energy system and providing more reliable energy security for economic development. This will help Qinghai better integrate into the national energy strategy and play a more significant role in national energy security.
CGN's technological prowess and innovative spirit in this project are worthy of learning and emulation. Their active exploration of new technologies and models, continuously overcoming technical bottlenecks, provides strong technical support for the development of China's renewable energy industry, reflecting CGN's responsibility and innovative spirit as a large state-owned enterprise.
The project's success also relies on strong government support and coordination from relevant departments. Government support policies have ensured the project's smooth implementation, while the active cooperation of relevant departments has guaranteed its progress. This reflects the government's emphasis on and support for renewable energy development and the excellent collaboration among various departments.
In conclusion, the full-capacity grid connection of CGN's 500-MW Cold Lake wind power project in Qinghai represents a significant milestone in renewable energy development. It not only provides a powerful impetus for Qinghai Province's green and low-carbon development but also sets a benchmark for China's renewable energy industry, offering invaluable experience and guidance for future projects. The project's success fully demonstrates China's strength in the research and application of clean energy technologies, making a positive contribution to global efforts in addressing climate change. In the future, CGN will continue to leverage its strengths to make greater contributions to green and low-carbon development in China and globally. The project's success also marks a major breakthrough in renewable energy development in high-altitude cold regions, providing new ideas and directions for future development in such areas. This innovative spirit and technological strength will provide a solid foundation for China to take a more advantageous position in the global energy transition. This will further enhance China's competitiveness and influence in the international renewable energy sector. CGN's successful experience in this project will provide valuable reference for other enterprises and countries, promoting the common development of the global renewable energy industry.
