The latest data shows that in the first quarter of this year, 72% of Portugal's electricity came from renewable energy sources, compared to 58% two years ago. According to EU statistics, Portugal ranks fourth on the list of clean energy usage rates in EU countries.
In recent years, the Portuguese government has accelerated the pace of energy transformation, and the development of green energy based on renewable energy has become its priority. Portugal passed the 2030 National Energy and Climate Plan in 2020, achieving the goal of shutting down thermal power plants two years ahead of schedule in 2021, and plans to achieve the goal of renewable energy accounting for 80% of the country's electricity consumption by 2026 four years ahead of schedule. More and more clean energy projects are being completed in the country, with the newly built Pesegro photovoltaic power plant at the end of March this year being one of them. The photovoltaic power station is located in the town of New Pinyar, about 40 minutes' drive from the capital city of Lisbon. Approximately 120000 solar panels are neatly arranged here, providing electricity for 26000 households.
The Portuguese government has introduced a series of measures to actively promote investment in green energy by major energy companies. In January this year, the Portuguese government approved Iberdrola to build a 1.24 gigawatt photovoltaic project, which is also one of the largest photovoltaic projects in Europe. Portugal Power Group plans to invest 24 billion euros in energy transformation by 2025, of which 80% will be invested in renewable energy and technologies such as wind, solar, green hydrogen, and energy storage, and double its solar and wind energy production capacity. This plan will enable the company to achieve carbon neutrality and 100% renewable energy targets by 2030. It is estimated that if Portugal can implement its energy related projects and intentions as planned, it is expected to attract over 60 billion euros of investment, equivalent to 1/4 of Portugal's annual gross domestic product.
Currently, 45% of renewable energy generation in Portugal comes from hydropower, 35% comes from wind power, and solar energy accounts for only 6%. In order to promote a more diversified renewable energy market, Portugal has increased its efforts to promote the development of the solar energy industry. It is expected to increase solar energy production capacity by 2.5 gigawatts this year and increase solar power generation capacity to over 8 gigawatts by 2030.
Portugal is also actively seeking to expand international cooperation in renewable energy. Portuguese photovoltaic industry insiders are generally optimistic about the prospects of cooperation with Chinese companies in the field of solar power generation. Pedro Amaral George, CEO of the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association, said that at present, photovoltaic panels made in China account for about 85% of the market share in Portugal, have obtained the highest quality certification, and have been recognized by power companies, financing institutions, etc. "It is expected that Chinese enterprises will make more investment and construction in the photovoltaic industry in Portugal and Europe".
