The project is the frequency modulation application of "Flywheel energy storage+lithium battery hybrid energy storage" new energy station. Three 1MW flywheel arrays are controlled cooperatively with 3MW lithium battery to form a hybrid energy storage system, providing frequency modulation auxiliary service support for Erenhot 99MW wind farm.
Wei Xiaogang, the project leader, said: "Flywheel energy storage uses the high-speed rotating rotor in a low friction environment to store energy. Its working principle is to use electric energy to accelerate the flywheel and convert electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage. When electricity is needed, the flywheel drives the generator set and then converts mechanical energy into electrical energy."
It is reported that the power density of Flywheel energy storage is relatively high and the startup speed is relatively fast, which is very practical for some specific scenarios, such as the sudden power failure of the data center. In order to avoid data loss, the energy storage system needs to respond quickly and start quickly.
Since the implementation of the project in 2020, the technical team has conducted in-depth research on interdisciplinary issues related to Flywheel energy storage, such as mechanics, Electromagnetism, heat, power system and control, making breakthroughs in the design and manufacture of high strength steel and composite rotor with large energy storage, low loss design of large capacity high-speed permanent magnet electric generator, high-efficiency and large capacity converter and its charge discharge control, high reliability and large load bearing magnetic bearing and its control Key technologies such as Flywheel energy storage magnetic electric thermal mechanical multi subsystem integration, Flywheel energy storage array coordinated control, Flywheel energy storage array participation in grid high-frequency secondary frequency modulation control, among which vacuum medium and large power high-speed electric generator, Flywheel energy storage high-frequency secondary charge and discharge control have reached the international leading level.
Experts said that the intermittent and fluctuating characteristics of new energy power generation have brought great challenges to the frequency stability and power supply reliability of the power grid. The wide application of Flywheel energy storage in the power grid can solve the environmental impact of electrochemical energy storage and the difficulty of limiting the number of charges and discharges, thus greatly improving the security of power grid operation and the proportion of new energy consumption.
