China has abundant graphite resources and a long history of development. What is the current development status of the graphite industry in China? How to achieve high-quality development?

On June 13, 2023 China Graphite Industry High Quality Development Forum (Lake Khanka Graphite Forum) was held in Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province. Famous academicians, experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs from the domestic graphite industry gathered in Jixi, the "Capital of China's Graphite", to conduct discussions on the theme of "green, high-quality, and sustainable development", exploring the optimal plan and path for the high-quality development of China's graphite industry.

Make the "Graphite Capital of China" more technologically advanced

"In recent years, Jixi City has firmly grasped the primary task of high-quality development, took the graphite industry as the main direction and priority of transformation and development, relied on the unique resource endowment, adhered to the development concept of 'high-end, green, intelligent and integrated', vigorously promoted the graphite industry to move towards the middle and high-end, and made every effort to create a core growth pole of high-quality leapfrog development." Lu Changyou, Secretary of the CPC Jixi Municipal Committee, said in his speech.

As a famous graphite mining city, Jixi has a history of more than 80 years of graphite development. Jixi City is one of the largest natural flake graphite production areas in the world, with huge reserves of graphite resources. The Proven reserves are 976 million tons, and more than 50% are large scale crystalline graphite, which has irreplaceable comparative advantages.

Chen Lin, vice mayor of Jixi City, said when introducing the graphite industry: "At present, Jixi City's output of graphite concentrate powder accounts for nearly 40% of the country's total output, and the annual growth rate of the output of deep processed products is more than 20%, with a strong momentum of high-quality development."

Jixi City has actively strengthened the scientific and technological support for the development of the graphite industry: it has led the establishment of a national graphite industry technology innovation strategic alliance, deeply combined with domestic and foreign scientific research institutions and well-known enterprises, and promoted the implementation and transformation of scientific and technological achievements in Jixi; There are 27 high-tech enterprises in graphite, and 7 research platforms of "national" and "provincial" have been established, breaking through multiple major key preparation technologies. The technological advantages of industrial clusters continue to strengthen.

Although it has taken the lead in the country, Jixi City is still seeking higher quality development of graphite industry. Lu Changyou expressed his expectation that academicians and experts will conduct "pulse consultation" around breaking through the bottleneck of the graphite industry development in Jixi, and help Jixi build a "graphite capital of China" with higher technological content, longer industrial chain, better market prospects, and better ecological environment. Jixi will provide the academician team with full life cycle quality services for development in Jixi.

Building a national graphite resource research and development platform

"China is rich in graphite resources. It is one of the few countries in the world that has both crystalline and aphanitic graphite, and is dominated by high value crystalline graphite. China's graphite output has long ranked first in the world, accounting for 65% -70% of the global total output." said Sun Chuanyao, an academician of the CAE Member.

China is the largest producer of deep processed natural graphite products globally, but it mainly produces primary and mid-range processed products, with high-end products mainly relying on imports. Sun Chuanyao said that currently, there are also some problems in the development and utilization of graphite resources in China, such as relatively backward graphite mining technology, lack of scientific planning in mining, low level of digitization, and relatively backward beneficiation processes and equipment compared to metal mines.

In response to this situation, Sun Chuanyao proposed suggestions for optimizing the graphite industry structure and enhancing technological development, namely strengthening research on basic theories, key technologies, and equipment, promoting the development, deep processing, and application technology upgrading of graphite resources, building a national graphite resource development and utilization platform, and promoting high-quality development of the entire industry chain of China's graphite industry.

Sun Chuanyao also suggested further increasing the exploration of high-quality graphite resources, phasing out outdated production capacity, improving the comprehensive utilization rate of resources through technological and equipment innovation, and solving key technical problems in the graphite field as soon as possible; Increase scientific research investment, establish a national level research and development platform, concentrate advantageous forces, break through new fields of graphite deep application, and achieve new breakthroughs in biological materials, environmental protection materials, and other aspects; Refine national Graphene development priorities, break through the bottleneck of China's special graphite development, achieve independent supply of key materials, cultivate domestic large special graphite enterprises, and develop independent brands.
