New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport VS Beijing Capital International Airport: Who is the Leader of the Asian Aviation Hub?
In the past decade, India's civil aviation industry has developed rapidly, becoming the fastest-growing aviation market in the world. The Indira Gandhi International Airport in the Indian capital, New Delhi, has become the largest air hub in South Asia, with its single airport passenger volume ranking among the top ten in the world, making it one of the busiest airports in Asia. At the same time, Beijing, the capital of China, with its Capital International Airport, has been ranked second in the world for ten consecutive years, with passenger volume once exceeding 100 million. Nowadays, with the opening of Beijing Daxing International Airport, the passenger flow of Capital International Airport has been diverted. So, who has a higher passenger volume among these two most important aviation hubs in Asia? Let's review the development history of these two airports and compare their current status.
Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi: The Rise of the South Asian Aviation Hub
Indira Gandhi International Airport was originally a military airport built during World War II. In the 1960s, the original Safdarjung Airport in Delhi exceeded its carrying capacity, and the airport was relocated here. In the 1980s, it was renamed Indira Gandhi International Airport in honor of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The airport is owned by the Airports Authority of India and operated by Delhi International Airport Private Limited. The airport is located southwest of New Delhi, less than 15 kilometers from the city center.
Judging from the number of daily flights taking off and landing and the passenger volume, Gandhi International Airport is the largest airport in India, with a passenger volume about 1.5 times that of Mumbai International Airport, India's second largest airport. These two airports carry 80% of India's civil aviation passenger volume each year. In the past two decades, the passenger volume at Gandhi International Airport has increased nearly fourfold. In 2006, before the airport was expanded, the annual passenger volume was only 18 million, ranking second in India.
In 2007, New Delhi's Gandhi Airport underwent a major upgrade and renovation, with the addition of a runway and Terminal 3. This terminal, built by the Indian government at a cost of over $3 billion, is the largest public facility built in India since independence. Terminal 3 covers an area of about 520 thousand square meters, making it the world's sixth largest terminal at the time, with an annual passenger capacity of 34 million. During the peak of construction, over 40 thousand workers worked day and night, finally completing the project in 37 months, shortening the construction cycle by two years compared to similar international terminals, demonstrating an amazing construction speed.
The opening of Terminal 3 gave India a world-class aviation hub. In 2015, New Delhi's Gandhi International Airport surpassed Mumbai International Airport to become the largest air hub in South Asia. In 2023, New Delhi's Gandhi International Airport exceeded 72 million passengers, ranking tenth among major airports worldwide. Currently, New Delhi International Airport is undergoing a new expansion plan, which plans to build two more terminals by 2030. After completion, the annual passenger throughput will be expected to increase to 100 million, making it one of the world's largest civil aviation passenger hubs.
Beijing Capital International Airport: The Leader of the Asian Aviation Hub
Beijing Capital International Airport was the first civil airport built in China after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and it was put into operation on March 2, 1958. At that time, it only had a small terminal building, which is now the south building of the airport. Entering the 1980s, with the rapid development of China's civil aviation industry, the Capital Airport underwent several expansions. At the end of 1999, Terminal 2 was put into operation. The original Terminal 1 underwent renovations and was reopened on September 20, 2004, specifically for handling flights of China Southern Airlines.
In preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, Capital Airport launched the construction of Terminal 3 in 2004, and it was put into operation five months before the opening of the Olympics. Terminal 3 was designed by the Netherlands Airport Consultants and the British Norman Foster Architects, with a total investment of 27 billion yuan and a construction area of 1 million square meters, making it the world's largest single-terminal terminal at the time.
In 2009, Beijing Capital Airport's passenger volume reached 65.33 million, making it the airport with the largest passenger volume in Asia. In 2010, Capital Airport's passenger volume ranked second in the world and remained so until 2019. In 2019, Capital Airport's passenger volume exceeded 100 million for the first time, making it the first airport in China and even Asia to achieve an annual passenger throughput of over 100 million.
However, with the opening of Beijing Daxing International Airport, Capital International Airport's passenger flow has been diverted. In 2023, Capital International Airport's passenger volume was approximately 80 million. Although passenger volume has declined, Capital International Airport remains one of the busiest airports in China and remains one of the most important aviation hubs in Asia.
Comparison and Outlook
In terms of passenger volume, New Delhi's Gandhi International Airport currently has a higher passenger volume than Beijing Capital International Airport. It is important to note, however, that Beijing Capital International Airport's passenger volume has remained at a high level after a brief decline. Moreover, with the operation of Daxing Airport, Capital International Airport's passenger volume may rebound.
Looking to the future, both airports have huge development potential. New Delhi's Gandhi International Airport is undergoing expansion, and passenger volume is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Beijing Capital International Airport will also continue to undergo upgrades in the coming years to improve operational efficiency and service levels.
In conclusion, New Delhi's Gandhi International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport are both important aviation hubs in Asia, and both have achieved significant achievements on their respective development paths. In the future, these two airports will continue to compete, jointly promoting the development of Asian aviation.
