From October 11th to 13th, the 2024 China Mobile Global Partners Conference, themed "Intelligent Regeneration, Co-creating the AI+ Era," took place in Guangzhou. As a significant event in China's telecommunications industry, the conference, now in its 12th year, has become a vital platform for in-depth collaboration within the global information industry ecosystem. Qualcomm, an active participant and technology enabler in the wireless communication ecosystem, has consistently participated in the conference for several years. This year, Qualcomm unveiled an expansive themed exhibition showcasing the "New Terminals," "New Applications," and "New Experiences" in the fields of 5G and AI.
Qualcomm's President and CEO, Cristiano Amon, delivered a video speech at the main forum of the conference, stating, "As the industry accelerates towards a future where intelligent computing is ubiquitous, Qualcomm is collaborating closely with China Mobile and numerous ecosystem partners to redefine experiences across terminals and industries, ushering in an era of unprecedented innovation. In the future, intelligent computing will extend to nearly all terminals, encompassing consumer and enterprise devices, including next-generation AIPC, virtual and augmented reality headsets, and intelligent vehicles; concurrently, wireless technological innovation will redefine immersive experiences and further enhance productivity, creativity, and entertainment across industries."
Generative AI, as the key trend for the next wave of technological innovation, is rapidly advancing, driving a new wave of terminal innovation, bringing about new applications, new forms, and new scenarios, constantly expanding the boundaries of "AI+." With the widespread adoption of generative AI and the ever-increasing computational demands, various terminal devices are becoming crucial carriers of AI. It is predicted that generative AI smartphone shipments will reach 550 million units in 2027, accounting for 43%. By 2027, over 60% of shipped PCs will be AIPC.
Qualcomm, through its advanced AI solutions and Snapdragon platform, is providing powerful AI capabilities for terminals such as smartphones, PCs, and intelligent connected vehicles, enabling these devices to achieve smarter voice recognition, image processing, and personalized user experiences. Currently, over 115 commercial terminals equipped with Snapdragon flagship mobile platforms have been released. In the PC realm, global leading OEMs like Lenovo, HP, and Dell have announced the launch of over 20 AIPC models powered by Snapdragon X series and running Windows 11. Based on the 4th generation Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platform, multiple car manufacturers such as Li Auto, Xiaopeng, and Jiyue have released in-vehicle large language model functions, opening up new application spaces for intelligent cockpits, autonomous driving, and other domains.
During the conference, Qualcomm's exhibition was brimming with captivating displays, showcasing a variety of AI phones equipped with Snapdragon flagship mobile platforms, AIPC built upon the Snapdragon X series, and numerous large language model demonstrations running on Android smartphones. Notably, the carrier-developed terminal large language model application, "End-side AI Agent," made its debut at the exhibition. This application achieved compatibility with China Mobile's Jiutian large language model on flagship models powered by the 3rd generation Snapdragon 8. It caters to the personalized needs and practical application scenarios of consumer terminals, providing users with features like intent understanding, real-time translation, and summarization, significantly enhancing user experience and intelligent interaction capabilities of terminal devices.
5G, as a crucial technology enabling the digital economy, has become even more prominent in the AI era. With the continuous evolution of 5G, 5G Advanced delivers a multifold increase in network capabilities, further strengthening its role as the fundamental connectivity "base." This effectively supports the rapid expansion of 5G and AI applications on the terminal side, driving digital innovation. As the focus shifts towards the terminal side for AI processing, 5G lays a solid foundation for AI to operate collaboratively across the cloud, edge cloud, and the terminal side, offering robust support for real-time AI processing and data transmission.
Qualcomm believes that hybrid AI represents the future of AI. Enabled by the fast and stable 5G connection, the hybrid AI architecture can allocate and coordinate workloads between the cloud and edge terminals, optimizing performance and efficiency while offering advantages like personalization, privacy, and security.
In the continuous evolution of 5G, 5G Advanced further unleashes application potential. With the completion of the first global 5G Advanced standard version 3GPP Release 18, 5G Advanced is rapidly being implemented, supporting more extended features like RedCap for lower-complexity IoT terminals, enhanced industrial IoT, and more. This will lead 5G into a wider range of industries and applications, providing a superior connectivity experience for AI-driven new use cases, more energy-efficient terminals, and networks.
As a key driver in the research, commercialization, and scaling of 5G, Qualcomm was the first to introduce two generations of 5G modems and RF systems supporting the 5G Advanced-ready architecture, enabling the majority of early 5G Advanced phones to quickly support multiple enhanced features. Concurrently, Qualcomm is working with ecosystem partners to drive the deployment of 5G Advanced in China and has achieved several milestones with China Mobile. Their collaboration extends to advancing the development of three-carrier aggregation, VoNR new calls, RedCap, and delivering high-speed data transmission experiences reaching 5 Gbps.
At the "Pan-All Alliance Revitalization and Win-win Cooperation Innovation Summit" held on October 12th, Qualcomm was awarded the "5G Development Special Contribution Award" by China Mobile, showcasing the fruitful results of their long-standing partnership and highlighting Qualcomm's diverse product portfolio. Through the Snapdragon platform and innovative 5G solutions, Qualcomm empowers a wide range of applications, from flagship devices to mass-market equipment, enabling more users to enjoy the convenience and innovation of the 5G era.
Numerous commercial devices supporting innovative applications like 5G new calls, 5G video ringtones, and more, jointly presented by the two companies, became a major highlight of the exhibition. These devices, powered by the Snapdragon mobile platform's robust terminal-side AI capabilities and support for features like IMSDC (Data Channel), infuse 5G calls with innovative elements like real-time digital humans, virtual backgrounds, special effects filters, and real-time translation, delivering a new call experience with visual interaction and intelligent efficiency.
Through collaborative research, Qualcomm has worked with China Mobile's Research Institute and terminal companies, leading the initial technological verification, laying the groundwork for new calls to transition from technological standards to commercialization. Additionally, 5G video ringtones attracted significant attention from visitors. Supported by terminal-side AI, users can generate personalized exclusive ringtones using their phones and experience rich and diverse services like text-to-video ringtones and text-to-music ringtones.
The synergistic development of the two fundamental technologies of 5G and AI has transcended the boundaries of individual industries, igniting cooperation and exchange across various fields. 5G facilitates high-speed interconnectedness for all things, while AI infuses intelligence and efficiency into various industries. The combination of the two will fully unleash the potential of ubiquitous sensing, interconnectedness, and intelligence, continuously generating a "multiplier effect" for high-quality social and economic development.

At the exhibition, Qualcomm showcased its extensive collaboration practices with Chinese industry partners. These collaborative achievements not only transform user experiences but also inject new vitality into industrial upgrading.
Specifically, Qualcomm, China Mobile, and Dang Hong Qitian jointly presented a 5G Advanced multi-concurrent large-space XR competitive gaming experience in a nearly 100-square-meter space at the exhibition, allowing players to immerse themselves in the virtual world. Powered by technological advantages like backpack-free, cable-free, and support for multiple XR users simultaneously online, this innovative practice recently received the "ICT China Case (2024) Outstanding Case" award, demonstrating the industry recognition received by the three parties for their efforts in driving continuous upgrades to XR digital entertainment experiences.
Furthermore, Qualcomm displayed in-vehicle entertainment experiences powered by the Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platform, "Snapdragon XR Magic Journey" built upon a Snapdragon XR platform-based all-in-one device and Snapdragon Motion Seats, and AIoT IoT modules for various scenarios like industrial quality inspection and smart retail. Through a comprehensive and multi-dimensional display of collaborative achievements with ecosystem partners, Qualcomm is working with the industry to jointly construct a new digital economy ecosystem powered by AI and connectivity.
