Empty Milk Cartons, Empty Pen Cartons: The Absurdity and Reflections Under School Metrics
Recently, a peculiar phenomenon has emerged online: the trading of empty milk cartons and empty pen cartridges. Parents, in an effort to meet the school's "environmental education" and "diligence" targets, are compelled to purchase these items that should have been produced by the students themselves. This phenomenon, while seemingly ludicrous at first glance, gives rise to deep unease upon closer inspection. It reflects the "formalism" prevalent in current education and its potential far-reaching negative consequences.
The Farcical Transformation from "Environmental Education" to "Empty Milk Carton Trading"
Originally, schools advocated for students to submit empty milk cartons, aiming to foster environmental awareness in children, encouraging them to conserve resources and minimize waste. However, this "good intention" has been distorted into rigid targets due to excessive intervention by some schools. The number of milk cartons submitted by students is even linked to awards and recognition, forcing parents to rack their brains and find ways to complete the task.
To meet the targets, some parents transform into "waste collectors," searching for milk cartons everywhere after work, bringing them home to clean, wash, and dry. Others choose to purchase large quantities of boxed milk, with the whole family mobilizing in a frenzy of milk consumption just to reach the required number. Even more bizarrely, some families who never drank milk, or even had children with lactose intolerance, felt compelled to purchase and consume milk just to meet the target, ultimately leading to discomfort.
This absurd phenomenon has also spawned an "empty milk carton trading" industry. Online merchants specialize in selling pre-packaged empty milk cartons, providing a quick and easy way for parents to accomplish the task. Some merchants even use the banner of "environmental education" to resell the milk cartons collected by schools online, forming a "closed loop". This behavior not only fails to contribute to environmental education but also completely distorts the original intention.
The Twisted Logic from "Diligence" to "Empty Pen Cartridge Tasks"
Beyond milk cartons, schools have also assigned students "empty pen cartridge tasks", requiring them to submit a certain number of pen cartridges each week as a measure of their diligence. This logic itself is flawed, equating the number of pen cartridges to learning efficiency, which is undoubtedly absurd.
Students resort to various tricks to complete the task. Those who originally preferred pencils or fountain pens are forced to switch to ballpoint pens; those who previously used high-quality, durable cartridges are compelled to use inferior, easily consumed cartridges. Some even resort to writing randomly on paper, blowing ink out of cartridges, or using AD calcium milk straws as substitutes to quickly consume cartridges.
These absurd actions taken to meet the targets not only fail to promote learning but also dampen students' interest in learning and even harm their learning habits.
The Drawbacks of Formalism: The Cobra Effect and Drinking Poison to Quench Thirst
Schools, in pursuit of short-term, "immediate" results, resort to "formalism," using quantitative indicators to constrain students' behavior. This approach is analogous to the "Cobra Effect" in economics.
During British colonial rule, cobras were rampant in Delhi, India. The colonial authorities offered a reward for catching cobras. This led to people breeding cobras to claim the reward, ultimately resulting in a surge in the cobra population. Similarly, these "metrics" imposed by schools, akin to reward measures, lead students and parents to engage in various distorted behaviors to meet the targets.
This "formalism" not only fails to achieve the intended educational goals but also generates more negative consequences. It stifles students' interest in learning, distorts their values, increases parents' burden, and ultimately leads education down a path of "drinking poison to quench thirst."
The Essence of Education: Focusing on Student Growth, Not Metrics
The goal of education should be to foster the overall development of students, not merely pursue superficial numerical indicators. Schools should focus on students' learning interest, learning habits, moral character, social responsibility, and other aspects, rather than using quantitative metrics to constrain their growth.
True education should emphasize students' intrinsic motivation, ignite their interest in learning, and cultivate their independent thinking and critical thinking skills, rather than using formalistic measures to restrain their behavior.
Schools should reflect on the meaning of these "metrics," abandon the pursuit of superficial "achievements," return to the essence of education, focus on student growth, and create a healthy and positive learning environment for students. Only then can we truly cultivate the next generation with a sense of social responsibility and innovation.
