Shanghai Telecom, ZTE, and Qualcomm Collaborate to Deliver Seamless Multi-User VR Experience with a 5G-A High/Low-Band NR-DC Private Network
Recently, Shanghai Telecom, ZTE Corporation, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. successfully demonstrated a multi-user concurrent VR service based on a 5G-Advanced (5G-A) high/low-band NR-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC) private network. This demonstration, held at the Snapdragon booth at ChinaJoy, showcased the potential of advanced 5G-A technology to support high-bandwidth, multi-user VR services in complex network environments, providing attendees with a high-quality, lag-free 5G-AVR gaming experience. This marks a significant breakthrough for 5G-A technology in real-world applications.
The demonstration was conducted at the main ChinaJoy venue, a challenging environment characterized by high traffic density and complex network conditions. Using smartphone-form-factor terminals and mobile Wi-Fi (MiFi) devices equipped with the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System, and PICO 4 Pro VR headsets powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Platform, the three companies connected to a private NR-DC network combining 800MHz bandwidth in the millimeter-wave band and 100MHz bandwidth in the 3.3GHz low-frequency band. This network connected directly to a VR game server via a core network proxy utilizing ZTE's base station built-in computing engine NodeEngine. This setup successfully supported multi-user concurrent VR services.
The results were impressive. Even with multiple concurrent VR users, individual user rates reached 80Mbps, supporting high-definition VR visuals at 72FPS, delivering a clear, smooth, and lag-free experience. This demonstrates the exceptional performance of 5G-A technology and its ability to handle complex network environments and high concurrent user demands.
Compared to traditional 5G, 5G-A offers significant improvements in speed, latency, and capacity. Its core technology, high/low-band NR-DC, effectively integrates high-frequency and low-frequency spectrum resources. A single base station using this technology can theoretically achieve up to 8.5Gbps downlink peak data rates and support over 50 concurrent XR users more than 5 times the capacity of a low-frequency-only network. Furthermore, high/low-band NR-DC boasts low latency, meeting the stringent requirements of XR applications and smart industrial applications.
This technological breakthrough provides strong technical support for emerging applications such as high-definition live streaming, extended reality (XR), ultra-low latency and ultra-high-definition video, and industrial applications. By efficiently utilizing both high and low-frequency spectrums, 5G-A technology not only increases network speed and capacity but also significantly reduces latency, offering users a more immersive audio-visual experience. This is crucial for applications like VR gaming which rely on high speed, low latency, and high capacity, laying a solid foundation for future innovation.
This successful demonstration is not merely a technical validation but a successful application of cutting-edge technology in a real-world scenario. Successfully achieving multi-user concurrent VR services in the high-traffic, complex network environment of ChinaJoy proves the stability and reliability of the 5G-A high/low-band NR-DC private network technology, signaling that 5G-A will be a key driver in the future development of immersive technologies like VR and AR. This not only provides consumers with a higher-quality entertainment experience but also creates immense possibilities for the rapid development of related industries.
The application prospects of this technology are extremely broad. In addition to its remarkable achievements in the entertainment sector, such as VR gaming and high-definition video live streaming, the 5G-A high/low-band NR-DC technology also holds immense potential in numerous other industries. In the industrial sector, its high-speed, low-latency characteristics can significantly improve efficiency and safety in applications such as remote robot control, industrial automation, and remote diagnostics. In the medical field, it can overcome geographical limitations to provide more timely and effective medical services for patients through applications like remote surgery and telemedicine.
More importantly, this demonstration fully showcases the combined strengths of the three companies in 5G-A technology research and application. Shanghai Telecom, as the operator, provided robust network infrastructure and technical support; ZTE, as the equipment supplier, offered advanced base station equipment and core network technology; and Qualcomm, as the chip supplier, provided high-performance chips and technological solutions. The close collaboration among the three companies was key to the success of the demonstration, setting a positive example for the further development and application of 5G-A technology.
In the future, with the continued development and expansion of 5G-A technology, we can expect even more innovative applications based on this technology. This will not only transform our lifestyles but also drive the transformation and upgrading of various industries, bringing greater progress and development to society. The 5G-A high/low-band NR-DC private network multi-user concurrent VR service demonstration jointly completed by Shanghai Telecom, ZTE, and Qualcomm is undoubtedly a significant milestone in the development of 5G-A technology and sets a new benchmark for global 5G technology applications. The successful application of this technology not only provides consumers with a better experience, but also injects new impetus into industrial upgrading and economic development. It heralds the arrival of a faster, smoother, and more immersive digital world. More importantly, it highlights the importance of technological innovation and industrial collaboration, laying a solid foundation for the continued development of future technologies. We have reason to believe that 5G-A technology will bring us more surprises and changes in the near future.
