Recently, the US media reported that the Biden government plans to extend the exemption period of TSMC, Samsung and SK Hynix, so that they can continue to conduct business in the mainland market. This move has been analyzed by many as a deliberate relaxation of restrictions by the US side.

The actual situation is not so simple, and the US cannot easily relax restrictions, as recent news has once again proven. A number of foreign media reported that the US might introduce new restrictions and target special chips, which surprised Nvidia!

There are many kinds of chips, and Nvidia chose the GPU road. However, due to various reasons, GPU has always been less popular and valued than CPU, so NVIDIA is not as popular as Intel and AMD.

However, in the thirty years of Hedong and Hexi, opportunities always favor those who are prepared. With the explosion of global AI, Nvidia's GPU began to become the focus, and everywhere scrambled to buy, Nvidia's performance rose rapidly.

Because AI chips are based on high-performance GPU, Nvidia A100 and H100, even though the price is high, the supply cannot meet the demand.

Even so, Nvidia Jensen Huang was not happy and even issued a direct warning recently. Because the US has imposed chip restrictions on us, the new export control regulations issued last October include restrictions on High-performance computing chips.

To this end, the US side directly sent a restriction notice to Nvidia, requiring it to restrict the shipment of A100 and H100 series to Chinese enterprises.

Jensen Huang said in an interview that the US export control "tied Nvidia's hands and feet", making it unable to sell advanced chips in the world's largest market. The Chinese market is irreplaceable, and their inability to participate will cause them great damage.

But even if Jensen Huang issued a warning, I'm afraid it would not attract the attention of the United States, because Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, also made a statement twice before. The implementation of restrictions will only cause the United States to lose more highly paid jobs, and cannot prevent China from owning powerful chips.

As a result, they returned to voicing, and the US continued to impose restrictions. To this end, Nvidia had to find its own way to launch A800 and H800 chips for special use in China, slightly lower than the standard restricted by the United States, and can ship to Chinese enterprises without restrictions.

Seeing Nvidia's move, Intel, which suffered heavy losses, also began to follow suit, launching two Chinese special CPU models in succession.

The A800 and H800 Chinese special edition chips reduce the transmission rate and speed on the basis of the A100 and H100, but can also meet the needs of Chinese customers. This series of products has been adopted by Alibaba, Tencent, and others in China.

However, the United States seems to be concerned about this situation, seeing that we can still develop High-performance computing based on special chips, so it wants to expand the restrictions. According to the Wall Street Journal, the US is considering implementing new restrictions.

Nvidia may be prohibited from shipping A800 chips to Chinese enterprises. If so, H800 may also be restricted.

In response to this news, the chief financial officer of Nvidia recently said that the new restrictions of the US side would lead to the inability of A800 and H800 to ship to Chinese enterprises in the future. Although it may not have an immediate financial impact, it may harm the company's growth momentum in the future.

Nvidia's revenue from the mainland market accounts for about 20-25%, which is crucial for Nvidia. If the US side really implements the new restrictions, although the current supply of GPU products cannot meet the demand, it will certainly affect Nvidia's performance in the future.

The key point is that Nvidia will probably lose the largest market opportunity in the world and lose its leading position due to its inability to participate in competition.

More importantly, as Huang Renxun said, if they cannot purchase from them, Chinese companies will manufacture their own GPUs. Currently, many Chinese companies have developed GPUs to compete with Nvidia in fields such as gaming, graphics, and artificial intelligence.

For example, Biren Technology, Muxi Integrated Circuit, Moore Threads, Cambrian and so on, although the overall performance of the GPU of Chinese enterprises still has a certain gap, if the United States expands the restrictions, their market will expand, which will naturally promote the accelerated progress of technology.

And Longxin Zhongke, which is developing pure domestic CPUs, recently stated that it is developing GPUs and is expected to launch them in 2024.

It is worth mentioning that the Chinese Academy of Sciences has also announced a major breakthrough recently. It is said that optical computing chips can be applied to AI chips, which are 1.5 to 10 times faster than the Nvidia A100. This technology has laid the foundation for future lane changing overtaking.

I'm afraid Nvidia has never expected that the US has targeted special chips! Although this may cause temporary difficulties for us, it will actually promote the progress of related chips in China. Therefore, foreign media directly commented that this is helping China Chip!

It can be seen that the US will not relax the restrictions at all. We must adhere to building an independent chip industry chain, which is the fundamental!
