The Ninth Huawei ICT Competition China Challenge Finals Conclude Successfully: Kunpeng and Ascend Tracks Crown Their Champions
On March 23rd, the finals of the Ninth Huawei ICT Competition China Challenge concluded at Jingxi Zhigu in Mentougou District, Beijing. A grand awards ceremony brought a successful close to this high-level technological competition. After two days of intense on-site optimization challenges and a half-day defense session, the top teams from 12 universities across China emerged victorious, showcasing the strength of Chinese university students in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.
This challenge was a newly established competition within the Huawei ICT Competition, focusing on high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) computing. It aimed to comprehensively assess the system optimization and underlying development capabilities of the participating students. The competition used an invitation-only system, with participating teams being strictly selected representative teams from top universities across China, including Beihang University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Southeast University, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Lanzhou University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanxi University, Zhejiang University, and University of Science and Technology of China (listed in alphabetical order by Pinyin).
At the competition site, 12 university teams competed fiercely, divided into the Kunpeng HPC performance optimization track and the Ascend large model performance optimization track. Technical highlights covered several aspects, including model migration, parallel strategy optimization, underlying algorithm libraries, and operator optimization, placing extremely high demands on the participants' systematic knowledge and practical abilities. The finals featured five rounds of leaderboard updates, adding more excitement and entertainment to the competition and allowing the teams to hone their skills and improve their abilities through competition.
The defense session was another highlight of the competition. The contestants clearly and comprehensively explained the optimization approaches, technical difficulties, and expected effects of their respective solutions, fully demonstrating their solid theoretical foundation and outstanding practical abilities, and highlighting the efforts of universities in cultivating high-level scientific and technological talent. The contestants' in-depth explanation of technical details and precise analysis of problems won unanimous praise from the judges.
Ultimately, the University of Science and Technology of China and Zhejiang University won first place in the Kunpeng HPC performance optimization track and the Ascend large model performance optimization track respectively, due to their outstanding performance. Their success is not only an affirmation of their own abilities but also recognition of the universities' talent cultivation model.
At the awards ceremony, attending guests presented awards to the first-place teams and congratulated and encouraged the contestants. Men Chunlei, R&D Manager at the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI), as a representative of the judges, spoke highly of the competition, stating: "Thank you to the Huawei ICT Competition for providing everyone with an excellent platform and practical opportunities. During the competition, the students demonstrated profound technical skills. I hope everyone will continue to work hard and inject more momentum into the development of artificial intelligence." His speech fully affirmed the value and significance of the competition and expressed the hope that the contestants would contribute more in the future.
Chu Pengzhi, Assistant Director of the Student Innovation Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, shared his feelings about participating in and guiding the students. He pointed out: "The development of the times and the sharing of enterprises allow students to easily access open-source technology. I hope that through this competition, students can establish more connections, continuously improve their technology, and contribute to the prosperity of the Kunpeng and Ascend ecosystems." His words reflected the importance of industry-academia-research collaboration and expressed his expectations for the students' future.
Liu Shuting, a student from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, shared his experience as a contestant: "Participating in the competition allowed us to transform from armchair strategists to peak performers in practice. We not only touched upon the cutting-edge trends of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, improving our skills, but also deeply understood the mission of scientific and technological talents. I hope that in the future, we can engage in practical work, create value, and grow into talents who drive scientific and technological and social progress." His remarks demonstrated the sense of responsibility and mission of a new generation of scientific and technological talents and expressed their determination to contribute to the country's scientific and technological development.
In addition to the professional technical competition, the challenge also held an online "Most Popular Award" voting activity, attracting the attention and participation of a large number of netizens. The 12 participating teams garnered over 40,000 valid votes, with fierce competition. Ultimately, Southern University of Science and Technology won the "Most Popular Award" with over 16,000 votes, showcasing its positive public image and strong social influence.
The award-winning teams of this challenge will be invited to attend the closing ceremony and awards ceremony of the Huawei ICT Competition China Finals on March 30th at Southeast University. At that time, the awards for the other four tracks of the Huawei ICT Competition China Finals Practice, Innovation, Programming, and Teaching will also be announced.
Huawei will also hold a talent summit forum at the closing ceremony, inviting industry experts to conduct in-depth discussions on topics such as "New Paths for ICT Talent Cultivation in the Digital Intelligence Era," "Innovative Mechanisms for Industry-Education Integration," and "New Curriculum Construction in the AI Era," to jointly promote the innovative development of ICT talent cultivation. This is not only a summary of this challenge but also a prospect for the future direction of ICT talent cultivation.
The Ninth Huawei ICT Competition was unprecedented in scale, attracting more than 200,000 university students and teachers from over 2,000 universities in more than 100 countries and regions worldwide. More than 140,000 registrations came from China alone, covering 1,618 universities in 31 provinces and municipalities, setting a historical high. The global finals will be held in Shenzhen from May 20th to 24th. Let us look forward to more exciting competitions and results. This is not only a technological feast but also a comprehensive display of the results of China's cultivation of scientific and technological talent. The successful holding of the competition signifies that China has reached new heights in the cultivation of talent in the fields of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. In the future, more excellent scientific and technological talents are expected to emerge from these competitions, contributing to the country's scientific and technological development. The continued holding of the Huawei ICT Competition will provide strong impetus for promoting China's scientific and technological progress and cultivating more outstanding talents. We have reason to believe that in the not-too-distant future, China will play an even more important role on the global technological stage.
