It is reported that many universities have announced that they will stop using WeChat Pay payment since July 1 due to the 0.6% service charge. At present, relevant announcements have been issued by Northwest University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Zhoukou Normal University, Zhengzhou University of Light Industry, Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics, etc.

The explanation given by WeChat is that since 2015, WeChat Pay has continued to adopt Zero-rating preferential policies in non-profit scenarios such as campus. However, due to our lack of fine management of the rate, with the continuous rise of campus scenarios and the number of merchants, a large number of profit scenarios involving e-commerce, wine and tourism occupy Zero-rating subsidy resources, leading to rising costs, and the cost of bank channels for this is more than 1 billion yuan. In this adjustment, only a small number of profitable scenarios, such as e-commerce and wine travel, will be implemented with preferential rate policies that are lower than the market average. Campus non-profit scenarios will continue to maintain Zero-rating.

As a national level application software, WeChat's every move is a driving force that has a wide impact. In 2014, WeChat Pay, which has become popular with Alipay, has become an online payment giant on an equal footing with Alipay. Even because of the strong social interaction and use of WeChat, there is almost no online payment product in China that can take the lead over WeChat Pay (i.e. Tenpay). Even the cloud flash payment backed by UnionPay was defeated by the two giants.

Although the 0.6% service charge mentioned by WeChat Pay this time is for businesses, compared with the 0.38% service charge for school businesses and 0.55% service charge for ordinary businesses on Alipay, WeChat is ugly.

Maybe WeChat Pay does have this confidence. After all, from 2021 to 2022, according to the survey results of China Payment and Clearing Association, WeChat payment is used more and more.

At present, WeChat has not yet formed a de facto monopoly. For this increase in handling fees, WeChat's operation is indeed radical. For the other two companies, if they want to recapture the market they have let go, it is also an opportunity. Especially for cloud flash payment, it started the latest, had the deepest background, and had the smallest proportion.

Now WeChat has apologized and cancelled this operation. But who can guarantee that this is not their act of asking for help? After all, we have experienced the three companies of Aiyouteng raising their membership fees together, adding exclusive advertising for members, and charging for on-demand broadcasts in advance. IQiyi Baidu series products, Youku Alibaba series products, Tencent Video Tengxu series products. Who knows whether Alipay will also increase the service charge later?

There is no truly free thing in this world, just like the beautiful rivers and mountains in China are surrounded by ugly walls. Perhaps one day, the air we breathe and the water we use will have to be surrounded and charged, just like Da Liu's "The End Producer".
