The project was approved in 2019 and is one of the first major provincial science and technology projects in Hunan Province with a supporting fund of more than 50 million yuan. Led by China Railway Construction Corporation Heavy Industry Group, the project, together with Central South University, Hunan University, National Defense University of Science and Technology, Xiangtan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, Zhuzhou Cemented Carbide Group and other scientific research forces, focuses on the lack of complete sets of equipment and low intelligence faced by China's super underground engineering construction Collaborative research has been carried out to address prominent issues such as poor geological adaptability, long-term dependence on imports for main bearings and high-performance cutting tools.

After concentrated efforts, the project team has overcome more than 10 key technologies, including the design of ultra large cross-section shaft cutterheads and synchronous technology for rapid assembly of pipe segments, high-precision positioning of geological exploration equipment and deep rock stress detection, intelligent support and adaptive cruise of rock excavation machines, self sensing of surrounding rocks and intelligent control of machine group operations. They have independently developed the world's largest diameter (23 meter level) full cross-section shaft excavation machine, the first domestically produced kilometer level horizontal drilling equipment The longest construction distance in domestic plateau areas (20 kilometers) is a full face rock tunnel boring machine, and there are four major types of specialized complete sets of equipment, including 8 types of ultra risk drilling and blasting method tunnel intelligent complete sets of equipment. There are two core basic components: high-performance and long-life rolling cutters, and main bearings of various specifications of tunneling machines.

During the special implementation period, a total of 172 patents were applied for, 96 papers were published, 16 software copyrights were applied for, and 16 enterprise standards were formulated. Relying on the relevant technical equipment developed by the special project, it was successfully applied in more than 10 national key projects, with good industrial application results.

The expert group believes that the special project has achieved outstanding results, overcome a number of international technical problems, and some of the equipment developed has filled the international gap, met the construction needs of national Megaproject such as the plateau railway, attracting people to help Liaoning, etc., seized the technical advantages of the global underground engineering equipment industry, and achieved significant economic and social benefits. At the same time, it effectively solves the problems of underground engineering construction perception, excavation, drilling, precise directional positioning, slag removal, support, machine group collaboration, intelligent control, and localization of key components.
