According to media reports such as NHK (NHK) and Kyodo News Agency, the Japanese JAXA started the combustion test of the second stage engine of the "Epsilon S" rocket at the Nengdai Rocket Test Field in Akita Prefecture County, northern China, at 9 a.m. local time on the 14th, that is, 8 a.m. Beijing time. The explosion occurred about one minute after the test began.

The footage broadcasted by NHK television showed flames and debris emanating from the test site, thick smoke rising to the sky, and the roof of a nearby facility being overturned. According to reports, around 9 o'clock, someone heard an explosion several kilometers away from the rocket test site. The local police said that no one has been found injured or injured due to the explosion. The JAXA of Japan is investigating the cause of the explosion.

The "Epsilon S" under development is an improved version of the small Solid-propellant rocket "Epsilon", which is planned to be launched for the first time in 2024. Epsilon is a Solid-propellant rocket with a total length of 26 meters and a weight of about 96 tons. It has low cost and strong launch maneuverability, and is considered to have the potential to develop into a ballistic missile.

According to CCTV News, in October 2022, Japan's Epsilon 6 rocket failed to launch. According to a report by Japanese media on April 19, 2023,The latest investigation results show that the launch failure was due to a damaged rubber film in the fuel tank, which blocked the fuel supply pipe.

According to the latest report issued by the JAXA of Japan, investigators focused on the blockage of the fuel supply pipe after analyzing various reasons that may lead to the failure of the rocket launch. Their further investigation found that the blockage in the pipeline was caused by broken fragments of the rubber film inside the fuel tank of the attitude control device. During the assembly of the fuel tank, the rubber film was accidentally sandwiched into the gap between the fuel tank and the fixed parts, causing some of the rubber film to break and fragments to be sucked into the pipeline connected to the fuel tank, causing the fuel pipe to block and preventing the smooth flow of fuel.

"Epsilon" is a Solid-propellant rocket with a total length of 26 meters and a weight of about 96 tons. The Epsilon 6 rocket was launched on October 12, 2022. The rocket initially flew normally, but then malfunctioned. The Japanese JAXA judged that the rocket could not continue to fly safely and issued a self destruction order to the rocket.
