The members of the Mineral Resources and Geological Environment Research Team of the High Altitude Comprehensive Research Team of the Second Qinghai Tibet Scientific Research on Zhuoyou Peak recently climbed up the mountain from Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet, at an altitude of 4950 meters, to reach the destination for rock sample collection - Zhuoyou Peak.

Zhuoyou Peak has an altitude of 8201 meters and is the sixth highest peak in the world.

The rock fragments by the roadside showed a metallic luster in the sunlight. "The rocks here contain rare metal elements. Collecting rock samples at different altitudes of Zhuoyou Peak can help us understand the distribution of rare metals in the Zhuoyou Peak area." Liu Xiaochi, a member of the scientific research team and an associate researcher of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced.

This is the first time we have systematically collected rock samples from the area of Zhuoyou Peak at an altitude of 5400 meters to the peak and surrounding areas. "Liu Xiaochi said that this scientific research collected over 60 rock samples of different altitudes and lithology.

Unlike rock samples that can be collected on the surface at the foot of the mountain, rock samples in the peak area with an altitude of over 8000 meters are covered with ice and snow. After climbing the peak, scientific researchers need to collect rock samples under the ice and snow every 50 meters using tools such as geological hammers. The collection of a rock sample at an extremely high altitude takes several minutes.

Wu Fuyuan, the leader of the detachment and an academician of the CAS Member, told reporters that previously, among the 14 peaks in the world with an altitude of more than 8000 meters, China only had systematic and complete data on rock samples of Mount Everest.

In 2018, a team in China collected rock samples at altitudes ranging from 5700 to 6400 meters above sea level on Mount Zhuoyou, but the data was hardly preserved. "Wu Fuyuan said that the first systematic collection of rock samples from the Zhuoyou area provided scientific support for further exploring the reserves of rare metal mineral resources in the Himalayas and revealing the history of the uplift of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, At the same time, it provides more solid samples for the preservation and research of mountain peak data with an altitude of over 8000 meters in China.
