Reported by Reference News Network on May 12thAccording to the report of Nihon Keizai Shimbun on May 14, mobile applications (APP) operated by Chinese enterprises are very popular around the world. Among the top five apps downloaded in 95 countries and regions, Chinese apps such as TikTok, a short video platform, account for over 30%, an increase from three years ago and on par with American apps. The United States has tightened restrictions on Chinese apps based on security threats, but the popularity of Chinese apps has not decreased.

According to the data analysis company "Sensor Tower" in the United States, in the first quarter of 2023, the top five downloaded apps in 95 countries and regions around the world, including Japan, China, and the United States, involved a total of 475, of which about 33% (156) were Chinese apps, a proportion that has increased by about 8 percentage points since the first quarter of 2020.

Specifically, TikTok, developed by Beijing ByteDance Technology Co., Ltd., has the largest number of downloads, ranking among the top five downloads in 82 countries and regions. The video editing application CapCut, also developed by the company, has seen a significant increase in download volume, entering the top five download rankings in 48 countries and regions.

Cross border e-commerce company Shein exports cheap clothing and groceries from China, which is highly popular among young people. Its app ranks in the top five download rankings among 10 European and South American countries such as Spain and Brazil.

By country, among the five most downloaded apps in the United States, Chinese apps rank first to third and fifth. Nine out of ten countries and regions have Chinese apps in the top five download rankings.

According to Shouyan Okano, an expert at the NTT Data Management Research Institute, new technologies and services from a user perspective are indispensable in the Chinese market, and companies that have won in the domestic market are highly competitive overseas.

American apps also account for over 30% of the top five downloaded apps in the 475, on par with China.

Although only Meta, such as Instagram, accounts for 25% of the total number of apps, compared to over 50% of apps in the United States in the first quarter of 2020, it is now much less than before.

China is still conquering the market with new products. In the first quarter of 2023, the most downloaded app in the United States and Canada was Temu, a cross-border e-commerce platform launched by Pinduoduo in the autumn of 2022. The lifestyle community Lemon8 under ByteDance, which became popular after the autumn of 2021, is also very popular in Japan and the United States.
