The the Pearl River is the mother river of Guangdong. Although it provides a continuous source of water and river passage, there are many obstacles in road traffic. To build an interchange road, it must cross the the Pearl River Estuary.

In recent years, Guangdong Province has continuously promoted the construction of transportation projects across the the Pearl River, of which the Shiziyang Passage has attracted much attention with its double deck and 16 lanes.

The Shiziyang Channel is the third cross river channel connecting Guangzhou to Dongguan City. It is located south of the Nansha Bridge and north of the Humen Bridge, starting from Dagang Town in Nansha, Guangzhou and ending at Humen Town in Dongguan. To the west, it connects to the Guangzhong River Expressway and to the east, it connects to the Changhu Expressway.

The construction scale of the Shiziyang Passage is huge, with a total length of 35 kilometers. It adopts a double deck bridge design scheme with 16 lanes in both directions, and the construction period is approximately 6 years.

Shiziyang Channel Route Map

Among the grand scale of Shiziyang Passage, Shiziyang Bridge, which spans the the Pearl River, is the most eye-catching. Shiziyang Bridge, as the control project of the project, adopts the scheme of "crossing the river in one step" with a main span of 2180 meters and a double-layer steel truss suspension bridge. There will be no piers in the center of the river. It will create five world firsts, namely, "main span, number of lanes, height of main tower, anchor foundation, and main cable scale".

At this scale of construction, it is truly amazing. Such a long main span is indeed unparalleled in history, and it is still a double-layer design. This is also a significant technological and engineering breakthrough in the history of bridge construction in China.

However, why do we need to design a double decker bridge? I think there should be several reasons:

Firstly, the demand for large traffic volume.

According to the current population of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, it has reached the scale of 70 million. This population size is distributed on both sides of the the Pearl River estuary. The population interaction between cities on both sides is frequent, resulting in a demand of tens of millions of commuters. At present, the bridges and tunnels on the the Pearl River are not enough, so more river crossing bridge and tunnel traffic projects need to be built.

Single story bridges can no longer meet the demand, especially based on the interchange between Guangzhou and Dongguan, two cities with a population of over ten million, which require more lanes and six lanes in both directions? Eight lanes? Why don't we just have sixteen lanes!

Once again, the demand for intensive utilization of land resources.

We all know that the most important resource occupied in the construction of large-scale projects is land resources, after all, projects are built on land. From the perspective of cross river bridges, the land resources they occupy are not only the space on the river, but also the space in areas such as approach bridges.

Building double decker bridges can save a lot of land resources and create significant unit benefits from the perspective of space utilization.

Previously, there were similar double decker designs in many parts of Guangdong Province, such as the public rail shared plan of Guangzhong River Expressway and Nansha Port Railway in Zhongshan, Guangdong, which is a typical successful case of intensive land use.

Third, the demand for space utilization across the the Pearl River.

With the increasing demand for traffic connections between the two sides of the the Pearl River Estuary, there are more and more plans to build bridges on the the Pearl River. Some have already been built, and some are planned to be built. However, for the continuous increase of bridge construction, it is definitely unfavorable for occupying the the Pearl River watercourse, so there will be more optimal plans.

On the one hand, the occupation of the the Pearl River channel will affect the navigation. If too many bridges are built, the navigation of the inland river will be hindered due to insufficient height. On the other hand, too many buildings on the the Pearl River will be detrimental to the future urban construction layout.

Adopting a double-layer design scheme is equivalent to building two bridges, which is a more optimized utilization scheme in terms of space.

Finally, there is a need for early layout of future major transportation.

The future Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area will undoubtedly be the world's busiest bay area, with a population of over 100 million, an economically prosperous and dynamic area. It will be the most active economic metropolitan area in the world, requiring early layout and construction projects that require higher specifications to adapt to the continuous development of the next twenty or thirty years. It is not just a decade, so a leading double-layer design is adopted, Can be extended to use for longer periods of time.
