The China Spallation Neutron Source is a large scientific device located in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. It is known as the "super microscope" for observing the microscopic world and can "see through" the microstructure of materials without causing damage to materials. The neutron detector is the "eye" of this large scientific device.

The neutron detector based on boron conversion has become a hot research topic internationally due to its excellent performance. With the upcoming launch of the second phase of China's spallation neutron source project, the proposed neutron spectrometer urgently needs new neutron detectors with large area, high efficiency, and position sensitivity. The preparation of high-performance neutron conversion boron carbide thin films is the most core technology among them, and currently only a few developed countries in the United States and Europe have mastered this technology.

After years of technical research and process trial production, the Chinese spallation neutron source detector team has overcome key technologies that have a significant impact on the coating quality, such as sputtering target material production, transition layer selection, and substrate surface treatment. Using this boron plating special device, various specifications of boron carbide thin films have been prepared and successfully applied to ceramic GEM (gas electron multiplier) neutron detectors on multiple neutron spectrometers of China's spallation neutron sources, The localization of key technologies and components for neutron detectors has been achieved, providing strong technical support for the development of larger high-performance new neutron detectors in the future.
