Hunan University Takes the Lead in Deep-Sea Mining: World's First Intelligent Electric-Powered Deep-Sea Heavy-Duty Mining Vehicle Platform Emerges
The deep sea world holds incredibly rich mineral resources. However, due to the complexity of the deep-sea environment, conventional land mining equipment cannot be used in deep-sea settings. Therefore, developing advanced deep-sea mining equipment is crucial for the utilization of these mineral resources. On June 17th, a series of achievements related to the "Deep-Sea Intelligent Heavy-duty Vehicle Platform and Mining System Equipment" were showcased at Hunan University's National Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology for Complete Vehicles, becoming a highlight of the exhibition.
World's First Intelligent Electric-Powered Deep-Sea Heavy-Duty Mining Vehicle Platform (6000m Grade)
This research was jointly led by Hunan University and the Changsha Mining and Metallurgy Research Institute Co., Ltd., with the collaborative development of CRRC Times Electric Co., Ltd. It overcame several key technical challenges, including high-precision positioning and intelligent control of deep-sea heavy-duty mining vehicles, digitalized virtual-real interactive operation and maintenance command, coordinated control of multiple drive motors for deep-sea heavy-duty equipment, deep-sea soft and rare bottom terrain crawler travel, low-disturbance adaptive sampling in complex deep-sea terrain, and long-distance high-power energy transmission in the deep sea. This resulted in a green, efficient, digitalized, electrified, and intelligent operation of the deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining system. Some of these achievements are pioneering internationally, filling in gaps in relevant fields.
Deep-Sea Mining Intelligent Operation and Maintenance System Equipment
Led by Hunan University, the research was jointly developed with CRRC Times Electric Co., Ltd. and the Wuxi Intelligent Control Institute of Hunan University. It achieved breakthroughs in key technologies like platform modeling of deep-sea heavy-duty mining vehicles and the high-precision modeling of the deep-sea environment, vehicle-mounted sensor simulation, coupled simulation reconstruction of the deployment and recovery system-umbilical cable-mining vehicle, and intelligent operation and maintenance of deep-sea mining operations. This enabled digitalized reconstruction and intelligent operation and maintenance of collaborative operations of the deep-sea mining system, providing crucial support for ensuring the safety and improving the efficiency of deep-sea mining operations.
National Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology for Complete Vehicles
The National Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology for Complete Vehicles at Hunan University was originally established in July 2006 as the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology for Automotive Bodies, approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2022, Hunan University took the lead, along with China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co., Ltd. and SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, in reforming it into the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology for Complete Vehicles. From "body" to "complete vehicle," the research scope of the laboratory has become broader and more profound.
Since the reorganization, the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology for Complete Vehicles has focused on major national strategic needs such as building a strong manufacturing nation and a strong maritime nation, and has collaborated with industry leaders such as CRRC and China Minmetals to focus on cutting-edge technological fields such as integrated innovation and application of special vehicles. This collaboration has led to breakthroughs in the development of deep-sea intelligent heavy-duty vehicle platforms and mining system equipment. These achievements have filled gaps in the industry, significantly enhanced Hunan Province's technical capabilities in deep-sea mineral resource mining, and provided core fundamental equipment and technological support for China's mineral resource development to move from land to sea, from near-shore to deep-sea and offshore areas, reinforcing the country's scientific and technological strength in its maritime strategy.
Innovative Achievements of the Hunan University Research Team
At the foot of Mount Yue Lu, researchers at Hunan University are focused on the cutting edge of technology, working tirelessly and with great enthusiasm to strengthen the "engine" of innovation. In this stand-alone building, technological achievements are moving from "experimental fields" to "application fields," transforming seemingly distant technological futures into accessible realities:
- Pioneering innovative automotive structural design calculation theories, the first in the world to develop GPU heterogeneous parallel automotive CAE software;
- First to create a development system for Chinese anthropomorphic dummies, establishing the China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP);
- Overcoming key technologies and equipment for lightweight body integration, with multiple technologies being the only ones in China;
- Leading the development of the world's first 240-ton intelligent hybrid heavy-duty vehicle, officially put into use in the main battlefields of the national economy, providing important equipment support for the transformation of green mining;
- In recent years, achievements have served over 100 vehicle development models, providing strong support for the development of the national automotive industry...
Currently, the laboratory is the only national laboratory in China with comprehensive research and development capabilities across the entire chain of "industrial design-engineering design-manufacturing process-vehicle integration," making it a source of original technologies for advanced design and manufacturing of complete vehicles in China and a gathering place for high-level talent.
In recent years, the laboratory has won over 50 scientific and technological achievements awards at the national, ministerial, and provincial levels. Undergraduate and graduate teaching achievements have won one first-class award and two second-class awards in the National Teaching Achievement Awards, six first-class awards and eight second-class awards in the Hunan Provincial Higher Education Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards. The laboratory has been granted over 280 patents and filed over 400 patent applications. Through industry-university-research collaboration and achievement transformation, it has achieved good economic and social benefits.
Future Direction of Automotive Development
What will cars of the future look like? Come to Hunan University and you'll find the answers you seek. The School of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering, where the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology for Complete Vehicles is located, has a deep foundation in the field of vehicle engineering.
