iPhone 16 Series Officially Announced: Size Upgrade, New Capacitive Button, But Still Conservative Upgrades
Apple surprised everyone by announcing its upcoming fall event on September 10th (1 AM Beijing time), signifying the official unveiling of the highly anticipated iPhone 16 series. Based on current information, the new generation of iPhones will feature upgrades across appearance, performance, and imaging, but the overall upgrade magnitude remains consistent with Apple's usual "toothpaste squeezing" strategy.
Size Upgrade: iPhone 16 Pro Series Features Larger Screens and Narrower Bezels
The most significant change in the iPhone 16 series lies in its size. Previous generations of iPhones saw minimal size variations, with standard and Pro models sticking to 6.1 inches, while Plus and Pro Max models remained at 6.7 inches. However, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to increase to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively.
It's speculated that the size increase in iPhone 16 Pro models will also affect the overall dimensions of the phone, making it slightly larger. However, the thickness is expected to remain unchanged, so the grip should not be drastically different.
It's worth mentioning that the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to further reduce the bezels on the front screen. Considering the iPhone 15 Pro Max already boasts the narrowest bezels at 1.57mm, the iPhone 16 Pro Max might push the boundaries even further to 1.15mm, setting a new record for the narrowest bezels in the mobile industry.
Minor Design Changes: White Returns, Standard and Plus Models Revert to Vertical Dual Cameras
In terms of appearance, the overall changes in the iPhone 16 series will be relatively subtle, maintaining Apple's familiar design language. However, there will be some adjustments to the camera modules of the standard and Plus models. These models will revert to a vertical dual camera arrangement from the previous diagonal placement, reminiscent of the "traffic light" design of the iPhone X.
This design change is not arbitrary, but rather a strategic move to support Apple's heavily promoted "spatial video" feature on VisionPro. The iPhone 16 Pro series will be capable of capturing "spatial video" that exhibits 3D depth effects, requiring the simultaneous use of both the main and ultrawide lenses. Therefore, the main and ultrawide lenses on the Pro series are also vertically aligned. The standard and Plus models adopting the vertical dual camera setup aims to enable all iPhone 16 models to support "spatial video" recording, paving the way for VisionPro.
Additionally, the white and starlight colors, absent in the iPhone 15, are expected to make a comeback in the iPhone 16 series. Furthermore, the black color on the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max will be deeper than the black on the iPhone 15.
Capacitive Button Added Across the Lineup: CaptureButton Brings a New Interactive Experience
The iPhone 16 series will feature a new capacitive button called "CaptureButton," which serves as the shutter button. This button is not merely a simple replacement for the traditional physical button but offers a richer interactive experience.
Previous phones typically employed physical mechanical buttons for camera triggers, often allowing for half-press focus and full-press shutter activation. The capacitive button on the iPhone 16 series can achieve the shutter functionality through pressure sensitivity and also allows for zooming in/out via swiping gestures.
The capacitive button design eliminates the bump of traditional buttons, contributing to a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Apple is also opening up the API for this CaptureButton to third-party app developers, enabling non-official camera apps to utilize the new button, expanding its applicability.
Performance and Imaging: A18 Chip Standard Across All Models, Pro/ProMax Could Feature A18 Pro
Upgrades to the iPhone naturally involve the integration of new processors. Historically, iPhones, regardless of standard or Pro models, have featured the same processor. However, starting with the iPhone 13 series, Apple began adopting different processor strategies.
The iPhone 13/mini's A15 chip had one fewer GPU core compared to the Pro/ProMax. The iPhone 14/Plus reverted to the full-fledged A15, while the Pro/ProMax received the new A16 chip. The iPhone 15 series continued this strategy, with the standard/Plus model using A16 and the Pro/ProMax utilizing the latest A17 Pro.
The iPhone 16 series could potentially revert to the strategy of equipping all models with the same processor, with the A18 chip being the standard for all. However, there's another possibility: the standard/Plus models use A18, while the Pro/ProMax feature A18 Pro.
Regardless of the processor configuration, the iPhone 16 series will feature 8GB of RAM across all models. This could be attributed to Apple's "Fruitful AI" (Apple Intelligence) requiring a higher memory configuration to function properly.
In terms of imaging, the iPhone 16 Pro/ProMax will see more substantial upgrades. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to adopt the same 5x periscope telephoto lens as the iPhone 15 Pro Max and will upgrade the ultrawide lens from 12MP to 48MP. The main camera is rumored to feature a custom IMX903 sensor, still at 48MP but with a larger 1/1.14-inch size. It will also employ a dual-layer transistor technology, enhancing light sensitivity.
Although Apple's hardware specifications still lag behind those of major Android phone manufacturers with their 1-inch sensors, the overall upgrades are still worth anticipating. Additionally, the battery capacity is expected to slightly increase, and the charging power could be boosted to 40W.
Apple Watch and AirPods 4: Exciting Updates
Besides the iPhone 16 series, Apple is anticipated to release a new generation of Apple Watch and brand-new AirPods 4 at the fall event.
Specific upgrades to the new generation of Apple Watch haven't been disclosed yet, but improvements to health monitoring features and battery life are expected.
AirPods 4 will come in two versions: a standard version replacing the current second generation, lacking wireless charging, and offered at a lower price. The AirPods 4 Pro, replacing the existing third generation, will incorporate half-in-ear active noise cancellation, similar to the design of Huawei FreeBuds 5.
Conclusion: Gradual Upgrades, But Still Highlights
Overall, the upgrades in the iPhone 16 series remain relatively conservative, but still offer some exciting highlights, such as the size upgrade, capacitive button, and A18 chip. However, in terms of imaging, Apple has yet to surpass its Android counterparts, and the overall specs still seem slightly conservative.
Ultimately, whether the iPhone 16 series can meet the expectations of Apple fans will only be revealed at the official launch next month.
