A New Paradigm for Human-Computer Interaction in the Era of Large Models: The Convergence of AI and IA "How much of the awe inspired by large models today comes from human-computer interaction, and how much from advancements in machine intelligence?" This question was posed by Xiangyang Shen, Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering, at the opening ceremony of the 2024 InclusionBund Summit. In his keynote speech titled "Opportunities and Challenges in the Era of Large Models: Technological Convergence, Industrial Leap", he explored the evolution of human-computer interaction in the age of large models, emphasizing the convergence of AI and IA (Intelligent Augmentation) and offering a new context for human-technology symbiosis

"How much of the awe inspired by large models today comes from human-computer interaction, and how much from advancements in machine intelligence?" This question was posed by Xiangyang Shen, Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering, at the opening ceremony of the 2024 InclusionBund Summit. In his keynote speech titled "Opportunities and Challenges in the Era of Large Models: Technological Convergence, Industrial Leap", he explored the evolution of human-computer interaction in the age of large models, emphasizing the convergence of AI and IA (Intelligent Augmentation) and offering a new context for human-technology symbiosis.

Shen believes that the development of large models will further drive the iteration of human-computer interaction. From the initial graphical interfaces to today's search and recommendations, and now to conversational interaction, large models are constantly changing the way we communicate with machines. He cites John Markoff, author of Machine of Loving Grace, who posits that throughout the decades of computer development, those who focused on human-computer interaction have truly achieved success. Ultimately, regardless of the technology, the goal is to empower humans to better utilize machines.

"We need to constantly reflect on the true purpose and initial intent of developing artificial intelligence," Shen stressed. He stated that AI agents, a recent focus of the industry, require a deep understanding of model capabilities and the construction of a workflow where AI plays a significant role, from vision to implementation, always with needs at the core. He argues that the advent of the AI agent era is not about a magical, powerful model suddenly replacing all workflows, but rather a gradual convergence of technology, engineering, and market forces, ultimately culminating in unexpected services for humanity.

Shen also points out that the transition from a new paradigm of human-machine coexistence to the industry-wide implementation of large models reflects the essence of technology and business forming a closed loop, where technological innovation truly changes the world. He emphasizes the importance of AI governance in the face of AI's growing disruptive power, advocating for the creation of responsible AI.

"From a governance perspective, we need new frameworks and systems to address the specific circumstances in different countries and regions. What technological tools and foresight do we have to build new systems from a global perspective?" This question, posed by Shen, serves as a warning. In the era of large models, building a safe, controllable, and responsible AI ecosystem is a shared responsibility that demands collective reflection and effort.

Shen's speech not only explores the opportunities and challenges presented by large model technology but also highlights the significance of human-computer interaction and the necessity of the convergence of AI and IA. He reminds us to always stay true to the initial purpose of artificial intelligence, to develop it to serve humanity, and to ensure its healthy and sustainable development through well-structured governance frameworks.
