Shenzhou-18 Triumphantly Returns! Chinese Astronauts Successfully Return to Earth, Sparking Technological Reflections
The Shenzhou-18 manned spacecraft's return capsule successfully landed at the Dongfeng Landing Field in the early hours of November 4, 2024, marking the successful completion of Chinese astronauts Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu's nearly six-month journey in space. The mission's successful completion once again showcases the remarkable achievements of China's aerospace technology while also prompting in-depth contemplation on the development of space technology.
On April 25, the Shenzhou-18 manned spacecraft launched into space with three astronauts, embarking on another conquest of the cosmos. During their time in space, they overcame various difficulties and successfully completed a series of tasks, including space science experiments and space station maintenance.
On the afternoon of November 3, the Shenzhou-18 spacecraft detached from the China Space Station, commencing its return journey. Employing a rapid return technique involving five orbits, it entered the Earth's atmosphere in approximately 7.5 hours. The return capsule streaked across the sky like a blazing fireball, enduring aerodynamic heating effects exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius at extreme speeds.
Upon entering the atmosphere, the return capsule sequentially deployed its guiding parachute, deceleration parachute, and main parachute, ensuring a steady descent toward Earth. The guiding parachute emerged first to prepare for subsequent deceleration. The deceleration parachute then acted as a stable guardian, reducing the return capsule's speed from 200 meters per second to approximately 90 meters per second. Ultimately, the giant main parachute, spanning 1200 square meters, unfurled, providing critical assurance for the return capsule's safe landing, stabilizing the descent speed at 7-8 meters per second.
It's noteworthy that despite encountering factors like crosswinds during the process, the return capsule still steadily approached its designated target - the Dongfeng Landing Field. The search and recovery task force in the air, already prepared for action after nearly a month of training, stood ready to welcome the astronauts home with a formation of five helicopters arranged in a "square" pattern.
At 1:24 AM, the return capsule successfully landed, igniting a wave of jubilation at the Dongfeng Landing Field. Ye Guangfu's family, residing in the Wan'an Community Office Conference Room of Tianfu New District, Sichuan, witnessed this thrilling moment via live television broadcast. As the return capsule's main parachute deployed, Ye Guangfu's mother, Liu Shaolin, excitedly pointed at the television screen, sharing her emotions with her son. When the news of the return capsule's successful landing reached the conference room, the atmosphere instantly erupted in excitement.
The successful return of Shenzhou-18 demonstrates the remarkable progress of China's space technology while highlighting the courage and resilience of Chinese astronauts. However, this mission also sparked contemplation on the development of space technology. For instance, the Shenzhou manned spacecraft employed a single main parachute for landing, whereas the American Crew Dragon spacecraft utilizes four parachutes simultaneously upon reentry. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages. Single-parachute landing is simple and efficient, but its stability may be slightly weaker; multi-parachute landing offers greater stability but could lead to interference between parachutes. This reflects the different considerations of various nations in their choice of space technology, and underscores the spirit of continuous exploration and the pursuit of optimal solutions within the realm of space exploration.
In the current era, the development of space technology is not just a symbol of national strength, but also a crucial stepping stone in humanity's exploration of the universe. We should approach the development of space technology in different countries with a rational perspective, respecting every exploration and endeavor. Simultaneously, we must safeguard the privacy and dignity of astronauts, ensuring they feel our respect and support as they dedicate themselves to advancing human space exploration. We have faith that China's space technology will continue to make breakthroughs in the future, contributing even more significantly to the grand endeavor of humanity's exploration of the cosmos.
