The reporter visited the Meituan drone operation station located in Xinghe WORLD, Bantian Street, Longgang District, Shenzhen, and saw several drones carrying takeout boxes passing through in an orderly manner in low altitude. From the large screen of Meituan Drone Air Operations Management Center, it can be seen that a drone slowly descends on the top of the intelligent air drop cabinet next to the office building, and then the cabinet door above the air drop cabinet automatically opens, and the delivery box is stably placed in the dining cabinet. A few minutes later, the customer came to scan the QR code to pick up the food. The entire process from placing an order to picking up a meal should not exceed 15 minutes.
Drone delivery has the advantages of fast speed and controllable process, making it an effective supplement to real-time logistics transportation. "Yang Junwei, the head of Meituan's drone operation, said that the long delivery time and the damage to food taste caused by collisions during the delivery process have raised concerns for the vast majority of catering businesses in providing catering services to the outside world. Drones can fly over obstacles and congested areas, directly delivering food to users, which is more than twice the time of traditional takeout, and the delivery process is smooth, avoiding spillage and odor during transportation. UAV distribution has also become a new consumption highlight in tourist attraction. In the Window of the World scenic area, Meituan has set up a drone landing point, which can be completed within 5 minutes from the merchant's meal to the user's pick up. Goods within a radius of 3 kilometers around the area can be delivered within 15 minutes. Prior to this, takeout was not allowed to enter the scenic area, and tourists who wanted to order takeout could only pick it up outside the scenic area.
Yang Junwei stated that drone delivery, as a new trend in future food delivery, has great development potential and advantages. With technological innovation and further improvement of policy support, drone delivery will gradually become a more common and reliable delivery method, bringing people an efficient, fast, and environmentally friendly living experience.
The rapid development of drone delivery is closely related to Shenzhen's early layout, continuous investment in construction, and policy and regulatory guarantees in the low altitude economic field. Shenzhen has a unique policy and industry chain advantage, with a huge market demand, which is the foundation for us to continue promoting business implementation in Shenzhen. Li Shipeng, Director of the Low Altitude Economy Research Center of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Digital Economy Research Institute, stated that low altitude airspace will become an important production factor for achieving new commercial and social values in the future. Within the low altitude airspace range below 120 meters above the ground, Shenzhen has the advantage of low altitude resources, with a suitable airspace accounting for 65%. The low altitude economic policy of Shenzhen also provides strong support for the research and development of drone technology and the exploration of commercial scenarios.
