How much storage space does your WeChat account occupy?
Recently, Jiang Shengnan, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, posted a blog lamenting that WeChat really eats too much memory! Previously, I only knew I could eat phone memory, but now I find that it can even eat the memory of a C drive. Once this blog post was released, it received recognition from many netizens and they all posted screenshots of WeChat storage space that often occupies dozens of GB. Subsequently, # WeChat Eating Memory # also topped social media hot searches.

Many netizens have stated that WeChat has always been the top ranked storage space for their mobile app. Useful users claim that "for a 128GB phone, a WeChat app accounts for two-thirds of the memory" and "256GB of memory, you need to clear the memory every day to chat. Some netizens also joked that WeChat is the driving force for everyone to change their phones, feeling that the entire phone is serving around it. Also, users roast that after using the cleaning function, they could hardly spare much storage space.

In response to excessive storage space, more users have opted for regular cleaning. In an online poll with over 900 participants, more than half of the users chose to "regularly clean up chat records", while only a small number of users chose to "buy a large memory phone" or "refuse to use WeChat".
According to public information, WeChat has updated the deep cleaning function as early as 8.0.16: users searching for "REC" in the search box will see the "WeChat Repair Tool", which can be clicked to turn on or off the "deep cleaning" function. The subsequent 8.0.30 version also fixed the issue of multiple saves of forwarded files, which was once the biggest factor affecting the app's usage of phone storage space.
However, in the eyes of many netizens, they dare not easily delete WeChat or deeply clean up storage space mainly because of work needs, and there are many important information stored in it.
Industry insiders have analyzed that due to the localized storage of WeChat chat content, the mobile storage and desktop synchronization of chat content keep the files locally, resulting in excessive storage space, rather than the WeChat software itself occupying a large amount of space. From a technical perspective, WeChat has always been a decentralized model, where users have local storage of chat records during use, resulting in high usage and increased storage space.
