Two thousand years ago, Chinese caravans traveled westward through the Western Regions, exploring through Central Asia, Persia, and even Europe. This trade route has gradually evolved into a prosperous Silk Road for thousands of years, reflecting the wisdom of ancient China and the people of countries along the way. The land and sea Silk Road, which stretches for thousands of kilometers, writes a legendary blend of civilizations and brilliance. Now, under the "the Belt and Road" initiative launched by China, the ancient Silk Road has regained its glory: the "Tiankun" set sail, the new landmark of Egypt has been rebranded as the "Pyramid Miracle", the Saudi New Town pursues the dream of the future, and new energy helps the energy transformation of desert countries. The extraordinary decade of the "the Belt and Road" has witnessed the interconnection between China and the Middle East countries, and the chapter of civilization will continue to be written at this moment.

UAE Chapter

There is a fish in the North Sea, and its name is Kun. Kun is so large that it is unknown for thousands of miles. Kun, originating from ancient Chinese mythology, is a legendary large fish. In 2019, the largest heavy-duty self-propelled cutter suction vessel in Asia named "Tiankun" was put into operation in China. Since its birth, the "Tiankun" has shouldered the mission of standing up to the sky: to implement China's "maritime power" strategy and respond to the "the Belt and Road" initiative. This "great power heavy weapon" not only breaks the technical blockade of western countries, owns completely independent intellectual property rights, and is the epitome of "national ship and national manufacture", but also makes an important contribution to the port construction, island reef reconstruction, and river dredging of the "the Belt and Road" countries. Even more rare is that the "Tiankun" team is composed of a group of young people, walking around the world, chopping and chopping waves. They are on the far end of the Earth, busy day and night in building frontlines, showcasing the grand atmosphere of the times in their throughput.

In August of this year, the journalist drove to the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. This is the hottest season of the year, with the highest ground temperature approaching 50 degrees Celsius. Passing through the city center, when the car drives onto the Hudaria Bridge, the two sides of the seawater present a completely different landscape. On one side is the urban area with towering buildings, and on the other side is an artificial island filled with yellow sand. The island was already a large construction site, flying sand and rocks all the way until a blue sky appeared in front of us. Change into a small boat and sail outward for another 10 minutes. The "Tiankun" stands tall on the ocean, waiting for our arrival.

Reporter Wei Ran from the headquarters:Riding in a small boat, we are sailing from land to the ocean. In fact, strictly speaking, the land we just stepped on cannot be considered land, but rather an island artificially created on the sea surface. And our destination today is the protagonist of land reclamation ahead - the "Tiankun".

The largest heavy self-propelled cutter suction vessel in Asia, the "Tiankun", has arrived in the Middle East for the first time

At the center of the sea, the behemoth that appeared before us was the largest heavy self-propelled cutter suction vessel in Asia, the "Tiankun". This summer, it was stationed here busy with homework and spent 9 months completing the reclamation work for the mountain landscape of two islands. This is the first time that the "Tiankun" has arrived in the Middle East, competing with dredging ships from countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium in the same waters.

Huo Zongjie, Secretary of the "Tiankun" Party Branch of the Abu Dhabi Project Department of China Harbour:We can see two mountain peaks in the distance, which are the two landscape mountains we are building through land reclamation. These two mountains are also two landscapes created for the development of local tourism industry. There is a cycling trail area on the island, with recreational activities such as tennis, as well as beaches, providing a leisure and tourist destination for local residents.

From the perspective of the "Tiankun", the island of Hudaria under construction has begun to take shape. Building an island from scratch is not an easy task. Under the leadership of the crew, we were able to glimpse the gallows of one of the "heroes of island building" at the bow of the ship. The reamer is spiral shaped and has iron teeth, resembling a 'armored giant'. It can reach the seabed directly and crush the hardest stones and corals. Every hour, the sand and gravel dug up by the reamer can reach 6000 cubic meters, which is equivalent to digging a deep pit of nearly 1 meter in a standard football field. By relying on pipelines on the sea surface, sand and gravel can be transported up to 15 kilometers away.

Gao Jianwei, Chief Engineer of the "Tiankun" dredging project in the Abu Dhabi project department of China Harbour:This type of rock is the rock from the seabed we are currently dredging, which is relatively hard. The hardness of this rock can basically reach 30 megapascals, which is equivalent to the feeling of placing 300 kilograms of weight on a person's thumbnail. Only a heavy cutter suction boat like this can break this rock.

In addition to the cutter, the two giant steel piles 55 meters high on the "Tiankun" are also impressive to adapt to complex sea conditions, and they are also known as the "sea stabilizing needles" of the entire ship. The ship is also equipped with the most advanced international automatic control system, and has the navigation ability and loading function of global unlimited navigation zones, which can achieve automatic dredging, monitoring, and unmanned control.

In a foreign land, machines can quickly start working as set, but crew members must also quickly familiarize themselves with overseas work processes and operating standards. The reporter found that English specialized terms and commonly used sentences were posted in a corner of the driver's cab. The first hurdle for overseas operations, which all crew members must overcome, is the language barrier.

Chen Jiajun, Sailor of the "Tiankun" Project Department in Abu Dhabi, China Harbour:Pump, our pump. PumpWater represents blowing water. PumpBlock means the pump is blocked. I don't use English in China, I only use it when communicating with foreigners here. I have learned these words through construction and daily communication, and gradually become bold in speaking and able to engage in some simple communication.

Amir Mahmood, Safety Engineer, China Harbour Abu Dhabi Project Department:For me, working with such a great team is a wonderful experience. Although we have different cultures, they are very professional and able to accurately complete tasks. I am very grateful that they can learn, appreciate, and respect the culture here in the United Arab Emirates.

The young team of "Tiankun": Walking around the world, "home and country" is always in their hearts

After being put into operation in 2019, the "Tiankun" began to participate in the construction of important projects in the "the Belt and Road" co construction country. Before experiencing the extreme heat in the United Arab Emirates, the crew had stationed in an uninhabited area in the Far East overseas, experiencing extreme cold temperatures of over -30 degrees Celsius, and had not disembarked for up to 8 consecutive months. People working on the deck, even wearing thick jumpsuits, helmets, and goggles, still struggle to withstand the knife like frost on their faces.

Huo Zongjie, Secretary of the "Tiankun" Party Branch of the Abu Dhabi Project Department of China Harbour:The sea conditions are extremely harsh, with strong winds accounting for three-quarters of the construction. Of course, when encountering severe sea and wind conditions, it becomes more difficult to provide supplies. It is covered with ice and snow all year round, and the water pipes are also frozen and cracked for a long time, often resulting in the lack of fresh water to drink. Wild animals like brown bears often appear in our work places, which also gives us a new mood and makes us feel more happy both physically and mentally.

Joy in adversity is a daily task that the "Tiankun" team faces. The team crew consists of a group of young people, with an average age of less than 32 years old, but the tasks they undertake far exceed what ordinary people think. On the long journey, eating, sleeping, exercising and entertainment are all in this small cabin. Since 2018, the crew have hardly ever celebrated a Spring Festival at home. Although the food in the restaurant is all homely, the longing for family is always lingering.

Xue Hongsheng, Chief Deputy of the "Tiankun" Project Department in Abu Dhabi, China Harbour:Last year, I stayed at home for a total of over 20 days. A child may grow taller in a few months, and every time they go back, they always play with me and don't let me go.

Walking around the world, the word "family and country" is often in my heart. The crew drove the "Tiankun" to the sea of stars again and again, creating the world-renowned "Chinese speed" in the key projects of the "the Belt and Road". In the future, there are still more unknowns to be discovered, and endless distances to look forward to.

Yang Mingjiang, Project Director of China Harbour Middle East Regional Management Center:We currently have 8 projects in the United Arab Emirates, which is a relatively open and high-end market for us. Its requirements are also closely aligned with those of Europe and America. Our Chinese company is also gaining increasing influence in this area, and our projects are also continuous.

Huo Zongjie, Secretary of the "Tiankun" Party Branch of the Abu Dhabi Project Department of China Harbour:There is still a significant demand for port construction in regions such as Africa and South America. Our next step is also to anchor some new technologies, do the iterative upgrading of the next generation of ships, and better serve the construction of the "the Belt and Road" countries.
