Technology Daily, Beijing, October 25th (Reporter Liu Xia) According to a report on the website of New Scientist magazine on the 24th, American quantum computer manufacturer "Atomic Computing" has developed the world's first quantum computer capable of running 1000 qubits, breaking the previous record of 433 qubits set by IBM's "Osprey", which may help improve the accuracy of quantum computers.

The latest quantum device developed by atomic computing company has 1180 quantum bits. The research team pointed out that although the number of qubits does not necessarily mean better machine performance, any future quantum computer with fault-tolerant capabilities will require at least tens of thousands of dedicated error correction qubits to work together with programmable qubits.

Robert Haas, CEO of Atomic Computing, pointed out that IBM and Google use superconducting wires cooled to extremely low temperatures to make qubits. The latest machines use neutral ytterbium atoms captured by lasers in a two-dimensional grid as qubits. One advantage of this design is that it is easy to expand the system scale. Their goal is to increase the number of qubits in the machine by an order of magnitude every few years. In addition, neutral atomic quantum bits are more suitable for quantum entanglement and more stable: quantum bits in new quantum computers maintain their quantum state for nearly a minute before crashing, and this coherence is crucial for error correction. In contrast, IBM's "Osprey" has a coherence time of approximately 70 to 80 microseconds.

Researchers say that given the "personality differences" of different quantum bits, it is difficult to compare the performance of different quantum computers, but the new machine has processing power comparable to IBM. They hope to open their machines to customers next year for running cloud computing applications.

Mark Schaffman from the University of Wisconsin Madison in the United States pointed out that before conducting a proper evaluation of the latest machine, atomic computing companies should disclose more details on how the machine works, such as how many quantum bits can be used and performing logical operations on it.
