What should citizens do to prevent the spread?

Wang Xinyu, deputy director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, states that although monkeypox is a threat, most people can effectively reduce the risk of infection by taking appropriate preventive measures and maintaining good hygiene habits. There is no need to be overly concerned. It is essential to pay attention the following four points in daily life:

  • Maintain hygiene and wash hands frequently, use disinfectants, and avoid contact with individuals at higher risk of infection;
  • Seek medical attention promptly if you experience symptoms similar to monkeypox, such as fever, rash, or discomfort;
  • Reduce unnecessary travel, especially trips to areas with high incidence of monkeypox;
  • Stay informed about updates, follow official announcements regarding the epidemic and guidelines, and avoid believing rumors.

Wang Xinyu emphasizes that residents and travelers to affected countries should report any illness to healthcare professionals during or after travel. Residents and travelers to affected countries should avoid contact with sick animals (including rodents, marsupials, primates) and their carcasses that may carry monkeypox virus. They should also avoid eating or preparing wild game (bushmeat). It is essential to remember to practice hand hygiene with soap, water, or alcohol-based disinfectants.

Summation

The spread of the monkeypox epidemic serves as a reminder to maintain vigilance and practice personal protection. The notice issued by the General Administration of Customs provides crucial preventive measures that we must strictly adhere to and actively cooperate with the relevant departments. At the same time, we should remain rational and avoid panic, pay attention to official and authoritative information, and prevent the spread of rumors. We are confident that through collective efforts, we can effectively prevent the transmission of the monkeypox epidemic and safeguard the safety of our nation and people.
