Paranoia Strikes Again: US Congressmen Label TP-Link a National Security Risk
TP-Link, a leading Chinese network equipment manufacturer, has once again become the target of "paranoia" from some American politicians. Two US lawmakers have accused TP-Link's routers of posing potential "national security risks" and demanded an investigation by the US Department of Commerce. This incident exposes the baseless accusations and suppression of Chinese tech companies by American politicians, further highlighting their "last resort" to protect their own interests.
Two US lawmakers, Republican Representative John Moolenaar and Democratic Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, jointly wrote a letter to the US Department of Commerce on July 13th, urging an investigation into TP-Link. They claim that TP-Link's routers could be used for "cyberattacks" against the US, citing alleged "firmware vulnerabilities" in the product as "evidence."
They view TP-Link routers as a "glaring national security issue," believing they might be used for "cyberattacks." The two lawmakers reportedly worry that the Chinese government could exploit TP-Link routers for espionage or information theft against the US government and businesses.
In reality, the US government and certain media outlets have repeatedly used "national security" as a pretext to accuse and suppress Chinese tech companies in recent years. From Huawei to TikTok, and now TP-Link, the US government seems to have contracted "Chinese tech phobia," viewing all Chinese tech companies as potential "threats."
It's noteworthy that the accusations from American politicians lack any conclusive evidence. They base their attacks on TP-Link solely on speculation and conjecture. The real situation surrounding alleged "firmware vulnerabilities" in TP-Link products requires further investigation.
More questionable is the fact that US politicians, while accusing TP-Link, avoid mentioning their own misdeeds in cybersecurity. In recent years, the US government, under the guise of "national security," has conducted large-scale cyber surveillance and attacks worldwide, monitoring and stealing information from other countries and individuals.
As the Chinese embassy in the US responded, the US authorities should have sufficient evidence when identifying cyber-related events, instead of resorting to unfounded speculation and accusations.
TP-Link, as a leading global manufacturer of network equipment, boasts a vast user base worldwide. The baseless accusations against TP-Link by US politicians not only suppress Chinese tech companies but also disrupt global cybersecurity.
The US government's constant use of "national security" to stifle the development of Chinese tech companies has drawn widespread attention and criticism from the international community. The Chinese government has repeatedly expressed opposition and called on the US government to stop discriminating against and suppressing Chinese tech companies.
The TP-Link incident serves as a reminder that Chinese tech companies need to strengthen their security defenses on their globalization journey, actively protect their rights, and resolutely resist the bullying behavior of the US government.
The development of Chinese tech companies relies on international cooperation, but they must also be wary of the "paranoia" of American politicians. We hope the US government will abandon prejudice and discrimination, engage in equal cooperation with Chinese tech companies, and work together to promote global cybersecurity development.
