On July 10th, the Underwater Archaeological Forum was held in Jinan. As one of the academic activities of the National Archaeological Work Association, participating experts gave 13 presentations on two themes: marine archaeology and canal archaeology. They conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on underwater archaeological and geophysical exploration technology, sediment ancient DNA exploration of biological lineages, changes in the historical status of ports and docks, sunken ship sites, marine construction project archaeology, research on underwater cultural relic protection and management policies, and research results on the archaeology and protection of the Grand Canal in various provinces.

Tang Wei, director of the Archaeological Research Center of the National Cutural Heritage Administration, said that this year, the Regulations on Underwater Archaeology will be promulgated and implemented to provide scientific standards for underwater archaeology. At the same time, the center will review the discovered underwater archaeological projects and conduct underwater archaeological surveys in Fujian, Zhejiang, Shandong and other places in conjunction with the upcoming Fourth National Cultural Relics Census of China.

Sun Jian, deputy director of the Archaeological Research Center of the National Cutural Heritage Administration, and Gao Mingkui, director of the Underwater Archaeological Research Center of Shandong Province, respectively made concluding remarks on the two themes of the forum. They believed that the Forum, based on the national underwater archaeological industry and serving the height of economic and social development, had made fruitful achievements in the archaeological work of cultural relics in the sea related construction projects, the historical status change of ancient ports and docks, the research on the sunken ships and their effluent, the Maritime Silk Road, the investigation and protection of modern sunken ship sites, and the archaeological work and cultural relics protection of the Grand Canal in the post World Heritage application era. Taking this forum as an opportunity, we will implement the spirit of the National Archaeological Work Conference, strengthen the protection of underwater cultural relics in accordance with the law, actively carry out surveys of underwater cultural relics resources, designate underwater cultural relics protection zones, improve the ability of underwater cultural relics archaeology and water cultural relics protection, strengthen the systematic planning of canal archaeology, strengthen regional cooperation, and enhance the supporting role of archaeology in building the Grand Canal as a symbol of the spirit of the Chinese nation.

More than 40 well-known experts and scholars from 21 archaeological research institutes and universities in Liaoning, Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan provinces and cities participated in the forum.
