China News Network, Beijing, July 21 (Reporter Sun Zifa) The latest animal behavior research paper published by Springe Nature's Open access academic journal Science Report said that Neon tetra (Paracheirodoninnessi) fish will queue up to withdraw from the narrow area to avoid blocking or collision.

The author of the paper observed that these small fish move faster through larger openings than through smaller ones, but they tend to withdraw from various sizes of openings at a constant rate - with the exception of the last few fish in each group, who will pass slower. Although small fish gather around before passing through various sizes of openings, the author of the paper did not observe physical contact between escaping small fish.

These findings together suggest that Neon tetra may wait or queue up before passing through the narrow opening to maintain their preferred social distance and avoid congestion. This is similar to the escape behavior of ants observed in previous studies, but opposite to the behavior observed in sheep and populations, which often experience congestion.

The author concluded that the behavior of these fish in the study may reflect the behavior of the wild Neon tetra passing through the rocks in the river. They propose that these findings may be used to provide information for the development of cluster robots, as well as traffic management methods for autonomous vehicle and crowds.
