Academician Wen Shizhu was born on November 2, 1932 in Fengcheng, Jiangxi. He graduated from Tsinghua University with a major in mechanical manufacturing in 1955 and received the Gold Medal for Outstanding Graduates. He also stayed on campus to teach. He joined the CPC in 1956. In 1973, he was transferred to the Gas Turbine Teaching and Research Group of the Department of Electric Power Engineering and served as the leader of the Mechanical Group. In 1976, he served as the Deputy Director and Director of the Mechanical Design Teaching and Research Group of the Department of Precision Instruments and Mechanics. Since 1981, he has successively served as the director of the tribology research room, the deputy director of the tribology research institute, the director and honorary director of the State Key Laboratory of tribology (reorganized and built into the national key laboratory of high-end equipment interface science and technology in 2022). Formerly served as a director of the China Society of Mechanical Engineering, Vice Chairman and Honorary Chairman of the Tribology Branch, and a director of the China Micron Nanotechnology Society; Director of the editorial board of Lubrication and Sealing; Editorial board members of journals such as Journal of Mechanical Engineering, Journal of Tribology, and Friction, Tribology International, and Tribotest.

Academician Wen Shizhu is one of the pioneers in conducting tribological research in China, and has always adhered to the forefront of tribological research. As an academic leader, Academician Wen Shizhu led a team to develop the theory of elastohydrodynamic lubrication for engineering problems, proposed the theory of thin film lubrication, and promoted the development of modern lubrication design theory; Developed research on nano tribology and made important contributions to the development of ultra precision surface manufacturing; The proposal to carry out research on mechanical interface science and technology has promoted the development of tribology in a broad direction.

Academician Wen Shizhu has published 7 academic works in 12 editions, including "Principles of Tribology" (four editions in total), "Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication", "Anti Wear Design", "Nanotribology" (two editions in total), "Interface Science and Technology", "Interface Mechanics", and "Principles of Tribology" (two editions in total). These works have effectively promoted the development of tribology education.

Academician Wen Shizhu has trained a large number of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in tribology for China. He has specially established the "Wen Shizhu Maple Leaf Award" and often encourages students and young teachers to dare to innovate, adhere to the integration of theory with practice, and write papers on the land of our country.
