From "Tears of the Times" to "Hot Commodity": The Comeback of Old DVD Discs
Years ago, we used DVD discs to watch movies, listen to music, watch TV shows and listen to concerts... Those colorful and dazzling discs not only recorded images, but also our youth. However, with the development of the Internet, DVDs have become tears of the times, eliminated by the market. But they haven't completely disappeared from the scene; instead, they've become a hot commodity in the waste recycling market. What exactly makes old DVD discs so valuable, and why are people still recycling them?
From Popularity to Being Gradually Forgotten: The Rise and Fall of DVD Discs
DVD discs were once the main carriers of movies, TV shows, and music, enjoying immense popularity. They were a storage medium that held countless memories for many people. The advent of DVD discs made the dissemination of movies and TV shows much faster. People no longer needed to spend expensive tickets to go to the cinema or sit in front of the television to watch TV shows, episode by episode. You could simply enjoy high-definition visual feasts on your home DVD player. In those days, if a family had a DVD player, they were the coolest on the block.
It can be said that DVD discs back then were as practical as projectors are now, but they had one advantage over projectors: their collection value. Many fans who like collecting discs would gather various movies, TV shows, and precious concert videos that they liked. For example, a young man in Xinxiang spent 100,000 yuan to collect nearly 5,000 discs. He was deeply attracted by films such as "Alien" and "Terminator" the first time he saw them and started to collect all kinds of discs frantically, eventually creating a disc wall.
In the golden age of DVD rental stores, primary school students born in the 1980s would always use their pocket money or allowance to rent a copy of "Young and Dangerous" or "Legend of the White Snake" after school. I wonder if they still remember that they had to pay fines if they returned the discs late.
However, with the development of the internet, these discs have been gradually replaced by USB drives, apps, and other methods. People now have more convenient, high-definition, and diverse ways to watch and download content online. Those discs that once accompanied us are now left in corners, gathering dust and can only be helplessly placed there.
The "Comeback" of Old Discs: Value and Environmental Significance
But for these inconspicuous discs, some people actively recycle others' old ones. What is their purpose?
1. Material of Old Discs: Valuable Resources
Discs are mainly made of polycarbonate plastic, a material with excellent impact resistance, a wide range of temperature use and good dimensional stability. Most importantly, it is non-toxic. The first layer of the disc substrate is made of colorless transparent polycarbonate sheet. It not only contains the grooves and other carriers in the entire disc but also constitutes the physical shell of the entire disc.
Polycarbonate is a high-quality plastic that can be used to make beverage bottles, food containers, fresh-keeping boxes, etc. It can also be used to make eyeglass lenses, sunglasses, eyeglass frames, and many cosmetic packaging products for women. In addition, the high strength and impact resistance of polycarbonate can also be used to manufacture safety helmets, kneepads, bicycle frames, and treadmill panels.
It is worth mentioning that recycling enough DVDs can reduce costs. Such a low-cost, high-return source of raw materials is a win-win situation.
2. "Silver" in Discs: Recycling Value Cannot Be Ignored
The third layer of the disc is the area that reflects laser light from the optical drive to read the data on the disc. The purity of this material is 99.99%, and 99% of it is pure silver metal. This layer of silver metal is used to protect the reflective layer and dye layer of the disc from signal damage. So it turns out that there is silver inside the disc, and the purity is very high.
3. Environmental Recycling: Reducing Environmental Burden
Recycling DVDs has another significant advantage: environmental protection. You have to remember how many families used to have DVD players. Those who didn't like them or considered them useless would discard them, even throwing them away carelessly. This behavior significantly pollutes the environment.
DVDs are plastic garbage, and this type of garbage can exist in the environment for a long time, causing harm to soil, water sources, and wildlife. Recycling can reduce plastic waste and lessen the pressure on the natural environment.
Waste Utilization: Giving Old Discs a New Life
Every household has old discs. It's a pity to throw them away when they break. People with handy skills can use them for DIY projects, giving old discs a new lease on life.
- You can cut up DVDs and stick them on your bag, making it sparkle beautifully.
- You can also stick fragments on flower pots and then cover them with hot melt glue.
- Some more skilled people have even made "magnetic levitation" decompression toys from DVDs. You just need two discs and some magnets, and you can evenly stick magnets to the edge of a disc in a ring shape. Repeat the process of sticking on the other disc, but ensure that they "repel each other." Then, use an empty syringe or a cylindrical tool that can penetrate the center of the disc to fix the disc to it, and stack the two discs together with the magnets facing each other in a repulsive direction. Place this disc on your desk. It can be fun to spin this magnetic levitation disc in your spare time.
- Some even use discs as home decorations, motorcycle decorations, and so on.
Conclusion
In this rapidly developing era, the "abandonment" of discs is a sign of progress. But many other objects share the same fate as discs, the most similar being mobile phones. Who doesn't have five or six unused phones at home? It's a shame to throw them away, but they're useless without being discarded. You'd be reluctant to buy them for 20 yuan, so they can only be left at home.
Do you have any other things in your home that have been "eliminated" by the times?
