Recently, a news story about "AI changing faces, being scammed 4.3 million yuan in 10 minutes" has become a hot topic of conversation after lunch, followed by another message about "Anhui man being scammed 1.32 million yuan in 9 seconds", which has deepened people's concerns about artificial intelligence technologies such as facial exchange and voice imitation.

The figures of 4.3 million and 1.32 million are something that the vast majority of people dare not even think of, even on the internet where the per capita salary is tens of thousands of yuan and everyone has a million dollar income. Many people are still shocked by this incident.

I still remember when Chatgpt was first released, it sparked a wave of enthusiasm around the world, and various AI development companies emerged like mushrooms after a rain. In a short period of time, various artificial intelligence technologies flooded people's lives. Convenient information processing technologies such as AI painting, AI writing essays, AI business analysis, AI programming, etc. quickly ignited the interest of ordinary people in artificial intelligence, I don't know exactly when AI face changing and AI voice interaction quietly entered people's daily lives.

The man replaces himself with a literary figure on TV, or a swordsman on the horizon, while the woman also becomes a wealthy lady, a modern Mulan galloping on the battlefield, and even replaces himself with a favorite artist, with a very high level of realism and no sense of conflict. Until this time, everyone was still immersed in the novel AI technology, without paying any attention to the danger of this technology.

Finally, a message online that read "4.3 million was scammed in 10 minutes! Be careful of this new type of scam!" went viral, and only then did everyone notice the horror of AI technology.

Nowadays, the voices online are more concerned about artificial intelligence technology. Is there a way for technology developers to prevent similar things from happening, and as ordinary people, how should they avoid being deceived.

So, what exactly is going on?

Detailed information

1. The boss of a technology company in Fuzhou was scammed 4.3 million yuan

At around 11:40 on April 20th, a "friend" of Mr. Guo, the legal representative of a technology company in Fuzhou, suddenly contacted him through WeChat video. After a brief chat, the "friend" told Mr. Guo that his friend needed a deposit of 4.3 million yuan for bidding outside the city and needed to post it to a public account. Therefore, he wanted to borrow Mr. Guo's company account to transfer the funds.

My friend asked Mr. Guo for his bank card number, claiming that he had already transferred the money to his account. He also sent a screenshot of the bank transfer receipt to Mr. Guo through WeChat. Based on the trust of video chat, Mr. Guo did not verify whether the money had been credited. At 11:49, he transferred 4.3 million yuan to the other party in two separate transactions.

After the money transfer, Mr. Guo sent a message to his friend's WeChat stating that the matter had been completed. But what he didn't expect was that the message returned by his friend was actually a question mark.

Mr. Guo called his friend's phone number and the other person said it was not the case. Only then did he realize that he had encountered a "high-end" scam, where the other person used intelligent AI face changing technology to pretend to be a friend and carried out fraud on him.

With the strong cooperation of the police in Fuzhou and Baotou, as well as the full assistance of the Mengshang Bank in Baotou, the funds of 3.3684 million yuan in the fraudulent account have been successfully intercepted, and the information on the remaining 931600 yuan outflow has also been controlled. The police in both cities are fully pursuing the recovery.

2. Anhui man cheated 1.32 million in 9 seconds

On the afternoon of May 25th, a news article from "Pengpai News" titled "AI Changing Face, impersonating acquaintances, and deceiving the police to recover 1.32 million yuan" was forwarded by multiple media outlets and quickly made it to the Weibo hot search. The host of the Weibo topic was "Anhui Public Security Online".

The two had a 9-second WeChat video call first, and then added QQ. After communicating with QQ, the account was transferred.

Case analysis

According to the police notices issued after investigating the two cases, it can be seen that both cases are typical of "impersonating acquaintances to commit crimes".

  • Both cases were established through brief WeChat video communication.
  • The victims of both cases are company owners.
  • Both cases were designed with deception and storytelling. 4.3 million yuan is a fake claim that a company to company transfer is required for a borrowed account, and a "bottom order screenshot" (fake) of the transfer was sent to it first to deceive trust; 1.32 million was hastily suspended after 9 seconds, transferring further interaction to the new QQ.
  • Both cases were promptly reported to the police.

WeChat has been hacked, which is very likely. The author's WeChat account has been hacked before. When WeChat was retrieved, there was no money left in the wallet. The police found through investigation that all items were scanned and consumed abroad, and the losses were irreparable.

There is a common point in all cases, which is that the video confirms that they are acquaintances, but it cannot be determined whether it is an AI facelift, as the video time is short and there is not enough evidence to support the information. Secondly, many people use their own photos as WeChat avatars, and if WeChat is stolen, this situation is also valid.

The issue of AI changing faces and voices is constantly emerging

  1. Recently, a female internet celebrity with millions of fans revealed an "AI facelift" incident. Her video comment section suddenly flooded with many people saying they had seen her "video," but she had never posted it. She doubtfully opened the video that her fans pushed to her, and found that the girl in it looked exactly like her, but she made some indescribable actions, which made her feel very angry and helpless.

  1. AI Stefanie Sun is in a big fire on Bilibili and even in the social circle. Sun Yanzi's songs are difficult to imitate and reproduce, which is something that the entire "talent circle" knows. But AI has made everything simple, and many up owners have achieved remarkable results by using this technology to reproduce Stefanie Sun's voice.

  1. The Anti Fraud Center of Baotou Public Security Bureau has released a case: Xiao Li's college classmate borrowed money from her through QQ. The other party made a four to five second video call, and when Xiao Li saw that it was indeed him, he trusted to transfer 3000 yuan. However, she felt abnormal during the second transfer and dialed the other party's phone number again, only to find out that her classmate's account had been stolen and report the case. The police determined that the video was most likely a facelift.

On Weibo, many netizens have also posted their experiences of being scammed. Obviously, AI fraud, a new type of scam, has quietly reaped a wave of people.

Changing faces for AI is not easy

No matter what software technology is, it is based on perfect hardware equipment. At present, our chips are not enough to support AI technology to be exactly the same as reality, especially in instant video communication.

AI facelift, mainly played in photos, short videos, and live broadcasts, is booming. People who are not attentive may not see much difference in photos and short videos, but in live broadcasts, various problems such as inconsistent facial expressions and facial deformities often occur. Even if their nerves are large, they can still detect some clues.

It should be noted that the voice changing and beautification functions in short videos and live broadcasts are tacitly approved by the platform, which means that the platform recognizes their approach, so there will be some technical support. However, in instant messaging, especially in videos, except for the camera's built-in beautification functions, all other beautification functions are prohibited.

So, in WeChat videos, AI face changing technology should also be difficult to achieve, after all, Tencent cannot openly open its WeChat port to society, which is also not allowed by law.

Therefore, whether it is a 4.3 million scam or a 1.32 million scam, the author believes that the two cases did not use AI face changing technology, but still follow the traditional "account theft+impersonation of acquaintances" modus operandi. However, the fraudsters are all experienced and have a good rhythm, and there was no exposure of any information from the other party throughout the entire process, indicating that the fraudsters have a rich sense of anti reconnaissance.

How to prevent

Whether it's traditional fraud or new AI scams, we should be careful to guard against them. In recent years, fraud cases of impersonating acquaintances (such as relatives, friends, colleagues, etc.) through WeChat or QQ have been on the rise. Although the platform is also continuously adding security measures to users, it is also helpless for the platform to communicate briefly through video or audio and use other payment methods for payment.

So, the author has the following three suggestions for you, hoping to help you be prepared.

  • Multiple verifications to confirm identity

When it comes to money transactions, remember to confirm the identity of the other party through phone or video. If confirmation cannot be made, you can set the arrival time to "2 hours to arrive" or "24 hours to arrive", allowing yourself time to confirm the other party's information again during this time period. If the other party requests to transfer to an account that does not belong to them, it is even more important to be cautious and confirm the other party's information multiple times.

  • Protecting information and avoiding leakage

Strengthen personal information protection awareness, whether on the internet or social media, and try to avoid exposing too much of your information. In the same way, don't participate in the activities of "adding WeChat, downloading apps, paying attention to the official account and giving free gifts" outside, be alert and refuse temptation, otherwise your information will be stolen by others.

  • If you haven't downloaded the "National Anti Fraud Center App" on your phone yet, I suggest you download it immediately.

You have not been deceived yet, not because you are so smart, nor because you have no money, but because the 'script' that suits you is still on the way.
