With the accelerated development of the digital economy, computing power has become one of the important social productivity, and the data center has become the infrastructure for the development of Digital transformation. As the data center market expands, industry energy consumption is gradually increasing. In this context, the green transformation and development of data centers has become an inevitable trend.

Recently, NatSahlstrom, the global head of energy, water resources, and sustainable development at Amazon Cloud Technology, introduced that Amazon Cloud Technology attaches great importance to energy efficiency in the design, planning, and construction of data centers. At the same time, it has also conducted relevant research and development and technological applications in water resource recycling. In addition, Amazon Cloud Technology is also exploring various ways to reduce carbon emissions from data center electricity consumption.

Unlike traditional cognition, technological investment in energy conservation and emission reduction has not brought about an increase in costs. On the contrary, continuously reducing carbon to improve energy efficiency and using renewable energy can help Amazon Cloud Technology further reduce costs.

At present, Amazon Cloud Technology is committed to promoting the sustainable development of the cloud itself, improving the energy efficiency of data centers by optimizing power supply modes and improving cooling data centers, and continuously innovating server designs to reduce carbon emissions. Amazon Graviton, a self-developed chip launched by Amazon Energy Technology, can improve the performance of cloud services, optimize costs, and reduce energy consumption. In 2021, Amazon Cloud Technology launched Amazon Graviton3, which supports a 25% improvement in computing instance performance and a 60% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous generation.

In addition to the design of servers and other hardware products, Amazon Cloud Technology also places great emphasis on energy efficiency in the design, planning, and construction of data centers.

In terms of power supply in the data center, Amazon Cloud Technology uses renewable energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaic power to power the data center, and reduces energy conversion losses by removing the central uninterruptible power supply (UPS) from traditional data centers and adopting a series of measures such as integrated small battery packs and customized power supplies in each rack. Maintaining stable power supply is crucial for data centers, ensuring high elasticity and availability. Therefore, the circuit design of Amazon Cloud Technology's data centers is designed with two independent power lines to ensure that even if one line fails, the other line is still available.

NatSahlstrom gave an example: "For example, when we plan to set up a new Amazon Cloud Technology Zone, we will pay great attention to the temperature and conditions of the surrounding environment, and use computational fluid dynamics to better understand the cooling or heat emissions of the entire data center."

With the gradual use of AI large models, how to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction while improving computing power has also been put on the agenda. NatSahlstrom believes that as a technology company, it must have the ability to invest in large-scale renewable energy projects, and at the same time, it must have a strong enough team of engineers to improve the energy efficiency of the data center. In addition, it is necessary to have the ability to invest in chip design to further improve hardware energy efficiency.

It is understood that currently, Amazon has announced the first two renewable energy projects supported in China, namely Shandong Solar Power Plant and Qian'an Wind Power Plant, which have officially been put into operation. These two projects have a total installed capacity of 200 megawatts (MW) and are expected to generate 496000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, equivalent to 250000 Chinese households' electricity consumption.

In 2023, we will continue to strive to achieve the major goals of achieving 100% use of renewable energy by 2025, achieving positive water efficiency by 2030, and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040, while also further improving the efficiency of our data centers, "said NatSahlstrom.
