Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, June 14 (Reporter Lu Chengkuan) On June 14, the reporter learned from the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the space radiation biology exposure experimental device (hereinafter referred to as the space radiation biology device), the first extravehicular load of the space station Mengtian module, was successfully extravehicular, and the experiment has been carried out. This is the first time China has conducted an experiment on the biological exposure of extravehicular radiation, which is of milestone significance for radiation biology and space science research.

It is reported that the space radiation biology device is jointly developed by the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dalian Maritime University. It is mainly used to study the impact of cosmic radiation and Micro-g environment and other stress environments on Model organism, to study space radiation damage and protection, Abiogenesis and evolution, and space radiation mutagenesis resource development. It can meet the needs of animals, plants, microorganisms, and small model animals for in orbit growth and development, as well as monitoring changes in tissue and organ damage. The modular integration of this device can also facilitate scientists to replace and upgrade according to research objectives.

There are 13 sample box units loaded with biological materials in the space radiation biology device, which can be used for in orbit experiments of biological samples such as plant seeds, microorganisms, small animals, etc; The radiation measurement subsystem within the device includes active and passive measurements. At the same time, each sample box unit can independently control the temperature to meet the survival needs of different Model organism; Cosmic radiation measurement includes both macroscopic radiation measurement and microscopic measurement targeting the sample.

The research on medical problems using space radiobiology devices is of great significance for supporting Human spaceflight projects such as long-term on orbit astronauts and manned moon landings in China.

The space radiation biology device has normal engineering parameters and meets scientific requirements in terms of temperature and other conditions. As the only space station extravehicular radiation biology experimental device, the device will carry out experimental work for 5 years and provide services for multiple scientific experimental projects.
